Still Can't Find a Job

I've been at this for over 2 months now. I have to move out of the place I am staying (for free)in January and I still have nothing. I have a BA in English from a good school and alot of experience in the audio field, two types of skills, so why can't I find anything above working at McDonalds? Aarggh. Right now I'm trying for a kitchen job because they pay $10 an hour, but it's a kitchen job. I started looking for work as an audio engineer and as a writer for newspapers and now I'm down to the kitchen. I couldn't even get a call back from Lowes.
I am now living off my dad's money, and he can't understand why I don't have a job yet. Apparently my cousin looked for 9 months before going to grad school. But I feel like my family just doesn't understand.
Is it just me? What is wrong with the world that someone with two degrees can't find work anywhere?

Whats your second degree in?
Probably the most often question your asked: What do you want to do?
While I'm not familiar with the field, is an englsh degree something thats going to help you in the audio field? If you want to put the degree to use I'd suggest the newspaper job.

Take your resume to a professional. Ask them to make you a few versions, for different jobs. Having a BA on your resume when applying at lowes does not help you out... on the same token, having "Excellent carpentry skill, and vast hardware knowledge" won't land you a job at a newspaper..
Well.. unless they needed someone to write a woodworking column, maybe..

unfort. audio engineering starts out with interning, unless you have the cash + gear to start your own studio.

Why don't you try out elance.com or some other b2b service exchange site?

I already interned for about four months in LA and I had finally made it to a paying position. The problem was my position just wasn't high enough and important enough that studios would have a need for me. I realized that the audio industry is totally oversaturated with guys like me that come out of recording school, but after they do their internship there is nowhere to go. Of my class of 15 I was one I think 2 that actually ended up in a recording studio but my stoned-ass irresponsible boss laid me off because he was wasting too much money and decided to overcorrect.
At least I get call backs from those places, but there just aren't any oppenings. That's why I went back to English/writing jobs.
I've got an interview at that kitchen today. It's a crappy schedule but they pay $10/hr.

Record local bands, audio for independent films, etc. Build up a good resume contact list and just work freelance when you can. Steady salary jobs are hard to find in your field, I know how it is. Good luck.

Did you ever consider getting into a trade? That's what I am doing (I'm in electrician's school). The money is very good and those jobs are always in high demand.
The two degrees that you picked are tough ones to make a living with. The only way to make money with an English degree is to become a teacher. The only way to make money with an audio engineering degree is to get a lucky break it sounds like.
Good luck D_S.

Or build up a lot of experience. This is what my husband does...has two music-related degrees and 10 years of experience, doing everything from sound in churches to sound for local bands and touring. I definitely agree with the person who said to record local bands, get in on any project you can to add experience and contacts to your resume, no matter how little or low-paying it may be. Word of mouth is really big in this industry and if you know your shit, people will recommend you to people who will get you more jobs...so much of it is who you know. Put "engineer available" ads out in your local music/artsy newspapers, make yourself some business cards, and tell everyone you come into contact with what you want to do. Good luck. It's tough to "make it" but it can be done.
