well, I'm almost ready for casing.....
    #503732 - 12/28/01 11:07 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

Ok, here's what the jars look like so far (inoculated 12/16). This is organic brown rice, 1/4 cup in 1/2 cup water in pint jars.

Here are the 1/2 pint jars with BRF and verm (sorry for the fuzziness):

This is the incubation chamber I used for the jars (it's a waterbath):

So, here's where I would like some input. I was thinking of casing these per hongus using perlite for humidification in a Rubbermaid tub. I have a nice hygrometer, so I'll have no trouble keeping track of the humidity level. These are Mexican #3 and Treasure Coast, from the Spore Works (great service, great product, WOO HOO!!). They've been incubating at 84F since inoculation.

My hope is to get:

1. some feedback on this casing tek. Does anyone have advice on this, or is some other tek better suited for a first timer?

2. some advice on technique. I've seen advocated 5 air exchanges (fanning) per day, or using an aquarium pump, with and without filters, and other recommendations. My question is, is sterility as much an issue at that point as earlier in the process? If so, I have a flow hood I can use if needed.

3. info about colonization vs. fruiting requirements. My understanding is that for colonization of the casing, it's best to have about 90-95% humidity and about 80F temp, but fruiting is better at lower humidity and temp (say 85% and 75F)? Is perlite necessary to maintain the humidity if daily mistings are used, or is it better to use perlite and forego the mistings?

4. any other comments, criticisms, or info, for which I thank you all in advance.

I've read all the teks (whew!--what a lot of info!) and have seen some conflicting info. As I said, this is my first try at fruiting, and I'd naturally like to see it work. I'm wondering if doing cakes would be better for a first time attempt?

Thanks in advance

It's a Fisher Scientific waterbath, a castoff from a University lab. They're pretty pricey, I'm afraid (this one, new, retails for about $700 or so)......

Thanks for the feedback :-)

yup the jar on the right has something red in it, not good, I wouldn't case that it might destroy the casing, i'd toss it.

Hmmm, can you point me in the direction of info about this "lipstick mold"? I don't find anything about it.

On second look, the pictures aren't a very good representation of the color. The red places in the jar on the right in the first picture are actually a dark brownish orange, and seem to be individual kernels of rice stuck to the jar side. The mycelium is nice and white and fluffy, including in that area. Maybe I'll case it separately and see what happens.

Any thoughts?

Hi
dont throw your jar
Case it alone and see what happens, it may be contams or not....
Sometimes rye jars have strangy orangish/reddish spots that
seem due to the rye itself (if someone can explain...)
But sometimes it's contams...

I definatly wouldn't waste your time by casing it seperate, throw the fucker out man. rarely ever are there any colors in jars that aren't contams

it happens man, ditch the colors and move on to your next jar.
