My h/poo is almost done colonizing! Question....

I have 3 casings of h/poo with Cambodian strain. Tomorrow will be a week thats it's been colonizing, I'll probly let it go until fri-sat to let it get a stronger myc. network.
When I to add the casing, how much should I put on? And is it alright that I do 50/50 on verm/peat moss? That's pretty much all I have.
When I go to sterilize the verm/peat moss how much water should I add for it to sterilize I'll probly use a PC to be safer. But how much water do I add to the casing?
After I case it should I wrap it back up in cling wrap and wait for myc. to pop up?
Sorry for all the questions, Thanks for the help

I'm surprised no one has answered yet.
I'll help you out with the little I do know. 50/50 peat and verm will work fine, if not better than coir.
Casing layer should be 1-2 inches, your choice.
As for pc, just follow the casing tek and load ready casing into jars and pc for 30 min. Just add whatever water the tek says to use.
For patching, you can make a extra jar of casing and just save it until ready to patch. It should keep fine until then. Case your poo and let incubate until the first signs of myc show on the surface. Use the casing from your extra jar to patch those spots and then switch to fruiting.
Good luck!

dont put more than an inch of casing, i use 3/4 inch on 4in. of poo. your substrate depth looks like about 2 inches, so put 1/2in. of casing on there. and then cover for a few more days so it can colonize.

Don't you think you should explain the ph of peat & why it should be adjusted.
>>>Casing layer should be 1-2 inches, your choice.<<<<
Wrong. It should be NO MORE than 1/4 the depth of the substrate.
5/8ths of an inch is fine.
A verm/Coir mix will do you better, on your first go at casing.
Simple & no Ph adjustment required.
R/K has a TEK for it.

5/8ths of an inch is fine.
1.) I thought if he read the TEK's for 50/50 verm and peat he would already know he should need a buffer. It wasn't one of his questions either.
2.) Sorry, I think I got poo casing mixed up with regular casing, like off brf or straight WBS.
Sorry, I was just trying to help since no one else seemed to want to!

Definitely make sure you put less than an inch of casing mix on there. I was told 1/4 the substrate. My substrate is 4" so I put an inch of casing mix. It is taking forever to colonize.
If you are going to use the peat/verm mixture make sure to put in a ph buffer. I don't know too much about them so you're gonna have to search for it. I like to use coco coir and verm for my casing. The coir you can find a petsmart or any other pet store. You can get it for five bucks and it is used for lizard bedding. So it might not have the words coco coir on it. The stuff I found didn't.
Goodluck with that poo. HOpefully my casing layer will be colonized by saturday and I can place my monotub out to fruit. 5lbs of poo plus 1lb of BRF should make me quite a few shroomies.

What? I've never sterilized my peat or verm before casing. I had not heard that you have to do that. Isn't it optional? I figured that by that point the mycelium network would be strong enough that you wouldn't need to sterilize the casing layer.

its pretty easy to sterilize casing mix, and it is recommended for sure, though you could probably get away without steriling... from time to time.

I've used peat unsterilized.... and wished I hadn't lost 10 breadloaf size pans to the evil green... never knew about ph adjusting it or sterilizing it until that happened. It sux0r3d

ok glad i foudn this thread without makin a new one, i hear verm/peat gives a much better yeild potential than verm coir, i want to use verm peat, can gypsum from a gypsumwall board be used as a buffer?? powered eggshells?
how important really is it to have a buffer is it an ABSOLUTE MUST and why?

It's not an ABSOLUTE must, but it helps. In fact, just this morning I added 1/4" of just plain peat that was sterilized to my poo trays to help out the 2nd flush pinset. No Ph adjusting was done to it, but I did PC it for about an hour prior to using it... peat has all kinds of nasties that can screw up your casings if you don't kill 'em first.

EXACTLY.
MOST PEAT MOSS HAS TRICHODERMA (MEAN GREEN) GROWING IN IT IN THE WILD! IT IS NOT STERILE OUT OF THE BAG, AND IF PRESENT, WILL COLONIZE YOUR MYCELIUM!!
Sorry for the caps and everything, but this is something I've been trying to get across to folks.
