Growing Mycelium on fruit?
    #4997416 - 11/30/05 03:55 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Im going to try this tonight, but i don't intend on it working. I just figure since alot of other molds grow on fruit, why not myc? I'll keep everyone informed. Mostly i just like to experiment with things.

I'm not sure what you are trying to do, but if you want mycelium to grow on your fruits, just keep the RH really high.

Are you talking about inoculating a fruitbody? hehhe.

Kumquat is just a great name.

I read a post that a pro cultivator posted on here about using jams and jellies for substrate - I would think from that information that it should be possible.

I know molds love fruit... especially strawberries.

Well, mycelium will grow on anything that even has the slightest amount of nutrients on it.

So yes, it is possible, but you will not be happy with your results.

There have been members on here, that I've seen, that have grown on a bible, golf balls, hats, a bra, etc etc etc.

So it has been done before, but mainly for entertainment value. Don't expect to get any decent fruits off of it.

If you would like to see pictures of that stuff....I believe it was Roger Rabbit who did that.

If you just want to mess around with it, go for it, but don't expect to get any mushrooms worth anything.

besides that, certain "fruits" will contain acids, so growing on something like an orange wouldn't be the best idea.

Can it be done?....sure....is it worth the time, effort, and spores?....no.

I just inoculated some sterile banana slices (good nutrients) with some myc. Ill post some pictures is it turns out cool. and yeah i don't expect to get anything big, just thought it would be a cool thing to try.

green or ripe bananas? i would recommend greener ones, ripe might be too sugary.
