Shopping list, quick replys appreciated/
    #4989101 - 11/28/05 09:43 AM (18 years, 3 months ago)

I'm heading out to buy all my supplies for myc. research now.

I've got my incubator, heres my list:

6 1/2pint jars (not tapered)
Brown rice flower (whole foods should have this?)
Clay Pellets...I found a 15lb bag for $10 near here, better than offline.
Fishtank aerator
Fruiting chamber - questioin, doess it have to seal completely? I've found many that might work, but thery dont seal quite right. Also, should i et a dark one, or a clear see through one? I thought see-through would create side-pinning.
Fishtank Magic Wand for aeration.

Anything I'm missing folks? I remember reading about coco-coir and other things, i've read so much in the past few days its all blurring together.

Thanks for your replies

Get more jars, pref wide-mouth.

- Perlite and Vermiculite

- Heavy duty masking tape

- Hydrogen Peroxide

- Lysol

- Spray bottle

- PC if you don't already have one

- Plastic wrap to help seal the FC

Clear boxes will grow them out at all angles.  Light is best from the top of the FC if you want them to all grow straight up.  I used a clear box with no problems however.

That's all I can think of :bongload:

Good luck

A few questions: I need both perlite and verm? Even with the clay pellets?

-Whats the masking tape for?

Do i need a humidifier? I live in Texas, its plenty humid, but it *is* winter.

Should I also worry about a hydrogometer yet? since i havent even incubated these guys yet?

Thanks a lot man I appreciate your help

I never used clay pellets for anything and get clearly remember them in any popular tek.  Someone can maybe shed light on that better than me.  The masking tape is to cover your inoculation holes on your jars when you PC them, also added protection from nasties.  Vermiculite is for the mix with the BRF.  Perlite is for your FC.  If you can keep the temp right in the FC and have the layer of damp perlite at the bottom, that will be all you need.  Also, the hygrometer you can either wait on or get now.  It's going to be a few weeks before you use it...

I'm assuming you are using the PF tek?

Yes, the clay pellets are what are linked in the original PMP thread. I'd tried lava rocks before but these pellets seem to do better.

The idea is to put the magic aeration wand under them, put the clay pellets over, water about 3/4 of the way, and that'll cause aeration. Closing the lid creates the humidity and whatnot.

The BRF and verm in the 1/2 pint jars ive done before but it was so long ago I wanted to make sure before I went and bought all this.

Right now I think im just going to get the jars, verm, PC, and BRF and get them incubating, then I can worry about the PMP later I think.

Thanks again for your help.

Again, I would just go with the simple perlite FC.  Easy and it works.

Good luck

(I hear stream/pond/lake etc... water works well with the PF mix, never tried it though...)

I went to texas hydroponics, the guy recommended a terrarrium they had set up that had crazy humidity on it. He said the clay pellets/perlite etc wasnt the best way, since the air from the outside to filter it would possibly bring in contams.

Anyway im undecided. I have a terrarium, verm, perlite, clay pellets, and my incubator set up. I also got my spores and stuff. I grew using the PmP before and it turned out ok, but i used lava rocks, and not BRF since i couldnt find it (i had to grind it myself).

He recmmended putting the cakes down, putting moist verm covering 85% of the cake around them, and having the mushies grow out of the verm. It seemed he was talking about casing but he said he'd done it before.

Any ideas? Should I just go ahead with my aerator/clay pellets and cake idea, or try his terrarium that he said you dot have have to open just let it grow. it cost $7 so I wasnt too stressed about it.

Any help would be much appreciated. You guys are great.

Not if you filter the air going in...

there are several ways to filter the air going into your fruiting chamber.

if you are doing cakes then you don't have to worry about side pinning... that's only a concern for casings.

Ive read the PF tek many times and I've done one grow, thanks though. I appreciate the advice to search, but please realize I have sone so. I had some questions I couldnt find the answer to, i'm sorry if I offended you by taking 2 seconds of your time.

Basically I'm trying to get a better yield. If I do the PMP like the guy didnt recommend it might not work as well, but i trust you guys a lot.

Anyway this terrarium is cheap plastic, with a clear lid, he said to cover the cakes 80% with moisst verm and forget te clay pellets.

I'm leaning towards PMP since its tried and true for me. Any advice would be appreciated.

I'm leaning towards PMP since its tried and true for me. Any advice would be appreciated. The terrarium I got has no holes, theres no fanning nothing. He said just let it go, and do it's thing after the incubation. Everything I've read says the co2 needs released one wayor the other.

So I'm a little confused, I'm sorry if I'm botherig anyone with my questions I'm just genuinely curious.

Thank yuou for those of you who responded with helpful information.

Also, I will post pics of my supplies tomorrow so hopefullky you canhelp me out. Thanks friends, I enjoy this community a lot.  :mushroom2::mushroom2:

I use clay pellets, or LECA. Different names same product.
I fill the bottom with appr. one inch and then add water so it all become wet but doesn't float.

You may want to rinse the LECA first since there prob. are pulverized ones in bottom in your bag after being transported.
Then place your casing in there, or cakes on something.

If one should live in an cold climate, an deeper layer of LECA and enough water to cover an fish tank heater could be used. The fish tank heater then heats up the water making it enough humid in there to make it drop water from the lid!

Just some input on one way to use LECA...

i'd recommend getting a 60-80 quart plastic tube for ure fruiting chamber, get perlite/hydroton/leca/whatever, get an airpump that will do more than 3 full air exchanges per day. the wide mouth jars i've found come in cases of twelve, IDK if you can find them in 6 packs or whatever, but I'd recommend getting 12 jars even if you only want to do 6 cakes at a time, that way you have spares, get a pressure cooker, its well worth it! you can find one thats probably at least halfway decent at walmart. they should have more than they usually do since its christmas time, get duct tape, its the handyman's secret weapon and u'll never know when u'll need it. then on top of that jst get some anti-fungal/bacterial cleaners. bleach is probably the most powerful one in walmrt, but its also the most harmful to your lungs, eyes, nose clothes, carpets, aything esle like that, lysol is good for spraying down things like fans and other places where dust has accumulated, it can also be used for the air but oust is better for that, 91% isopropyl rubbing alcohol solution, should be able to find it in the pharmacy section, hydrogen peroxide, paper towels, and a spray bottle. If u make good use of all those chemicals and other supplies theres no doubt in my mind that u'll have success.

Ok so, choices atm:

1.Make a PMP, I'd need a fishtank aerator, magic wnad, and a rubber maid container.

Benefits?

2. Use this terrarium the guy at texas hydroponics sold me, do like he said and drop the cakes onto an inch or two of wet verm...this gives little ot no air exchange, no heat, nofanning...he said just let them grow. There's not even a humidifier. Personally I think he was tlaking out of his ass but hey he's thehydroponics specialist. He said fanning isnt necessary since they arent "plants" and dont create much co2.

I thinkthe PMP would be the best bet, but id have to buy the aerator and i'm low on funds atm.

IF I was going to use the terrarium (with a siton lid, doesnt even snap down), how much verm should I put below the cakes? How would I get humidityinside? Outside heat source? Wouldnt I have to fan?
