Casings- to cover or not?
    #498845 - 12/22/01 07:58 PM (22 years, 2 months ago)

I have seen variouse opinions on if one should cover thier casings during the initial colonization stages or not. Opinions and helpfull stories are welcome.

i was concerned about this myself, and i have obtained the following knowelge about this problem, leave casing covered and in dark until surface is 50% myc. then uncover and spray heavily with water to initiate pinning, place in terrarium then leave cover off of terrarium a couple hours per day until harvest. i maybe wrong about taking cover off a couple hours per day, so any other advise would be appreciated

take the cover off (for good) when it is 30-50 % colonized.

cover your casings but allow some air flow. Small holes in the cover are skippy. Allow them to hang out with temps in the mid 80's, with no light, and humidity in the mid 90's. Depending on things..... within a few weeks you should see the myc peeking out of the casing layer in spots. remove the cover and spot cover the myc with casing material. What you are trying to do is allow the whole casing layer to be colonized equally before you induce pinning. Recover and allow to colonize until you see myc peeking out all over. Now its time to trigger pins. Turn on the lights, drop your temp ten degrees (mid 70's), and drop humidity down to 80-85%. Fan and lightly mist until you get your just rewards!! Casings are not like cakes- They do NOT like to be super humid. The myc gets a lot of its moisture from the air in cake form. The casing layer provides the moisture to cased myc. Too much direct spraying or standing water can cause your myc to get tough and not accept any water (called overlay). Anyway .....
good luck

wow that was long!
