Start Menu disappeared after using latest windows updates?
    #4946605 - 11/17/05 01:40 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Hello fellow Shroomerites,

I am having a problem with windows. It started after doing the newest windows updates. I have XP SP2 Corp. edition installed on my computer, it works fine, yada yada, Restarted after installing all the updates that were on the website, after I restarted, the welcome screen came on, took around a minute or two to boot past that, came up with my desktop background picture for another minute, then loaded my icons but never loaded the start menu. I bring up task manager and it gives the names of all the programs running, just not who's user account they are running under. I have narrowed it down to a windows update (I Think, I've reformatted 5 times in the past 3 days to make sure of this) but I'm not sure why it is causing this to do this at all. Has anyone ever had this happen with the newest windows updates or heard anything at all about this? It's really bugging me.

I've also tried system restore (doesn't load up at all) and safe mode, same with last known good configuration. Also, it seems my drivers/services are not loading up at all either as when I run an SFC /SCANNOW through task manager, it doesn't do anything and whenever I get a beep, it comes through the internal computer speaker, not through my sound card. Also, my internet connection (wired, DSL icon on desktop) does not do anything anymore.

Any tips or hints or anyone ever heard of this?

Youe explorer.exe is crashing. Try uninstalling SP2. Some computers don't like it. Reapplying it may or may not work.

can't uninstall SP2, this is a disk I have been using for the last 15+ reformats and has worked every time except when doing windows updates and it has SP2 integrated into the cd.

and explorer.exe is still in the process list, I tried to end it and restart it, but still no start menu.

You don't get a start menu in safe mode, either?

Try bringing up the services.msc applet via taskmanager, see if everything that should load is loading properly.

When I do, the first services window (with the blue and white, i forgot what it's called) comes up but that's all, I can click on the other tab on the bottom and it shows the services that should be there are there and loaded.

I don't know, then, man. That's one of those things that I'd have to be in front of the computer to figure out. I'll give it a look tomorrow if you want!

I've figured it out.

I think it was nero 7, then it happened again after installing some random programs.

whatever. that's my opinion. add one program at a time, see what fucks up.
