Geocaching....and so it begins *update-pics added*
    #4934174 - 11/14/05 08:00 PM (18 years, 4 months ago)

Had to try out the new unit today.  Walked to 3 locations this afternoon all within 1.5 miles of my house.  Found 2 of them, the other will be revisited after reading some logs about it on-line.  This will make it a lot easier for me to decide where to go hiking on weekends.  Instead of a randomn choice of trails I can set up a few geocaches to search for.

Here is my first find ever...tucked into a guardrail next to a Wal-mart!

hatta and I were walking along a park trail in Iowa City and found a plastic tupperware container tucked inside a hole in a tree. We both spotted it instantly as we walked by the tree. There was a note taped to the lid telling us that it was part of a nationwide game of some kind and not to disturb it. We rifled through it, considered putting some weed in there, thought better of it, then put it back and went along our way.

Is that considered geocaching?

Yeah, sounds like you found one. I also found a few in the past by accident. Some that aren't hidden well can be stumbled upon and others of them are hidden in places where you would never find them unless you are specifically looking.

Yeah, pretty much.  Just a way to make hiking a little more fun.

Just a log book to sign in that you found it.  But I have some good pics of a cache I found today on the mountain behind my neighborhood.  Unfortunately, the boards are slower then shit tonight and I can't upload any of them.

OK, I can get a couple pics up tonight.

Here is the cache from yesterday. It had a few randomn things in it. Keychains, stickers, toys, a book. And a logbook to sign in that I was there. I took nothing with me but left behind 2 new keyed-alike padlocks.

Here is the view from the cache. Notice my truck parked down below. And thats my neighborhood just beyond.

And my obligatory self-portrait from the spot...

And while I was hiking around I saw an owl. I spooked it out of its nest (a burrow in the side of a cliff) and it wasn't real happy to see me poking around its digs!!

The neat thing is that I hiked this hill for the first time ever, and I live just 2 miles away from it. Thats the nice thing about geocaching, it inspires you to go places that you have never thought about going!

There are quite a few caches here on Maui. Now that we have net access we'll start hitting some of them up instead of just going to the beach every weekend :-)
