Question about mycelium/cutting cakes in half
    #4908782 - 11/08/05 11:23 AM (18 years, 4 months ago)

In cakes, how does mycelium grow? Does it just grow on the surface or throughout the cake? I saw a few posts about cutting cakes in half to get better results (don't want to get into casings yet). I have five pint jars that are about done colonizing, do I just cut them in half with a sterile cutting tool and then dunk & roll and put cut edge down when birthed?

Thanks people!

Mycelium covers the entire cake not just the outside. And everything sounds good on the cutting there just make sure you dunk and roll and maby consider Double End Casing its not hard you just put damp verm in a lid set your cake on it and put more damp verm on top of your cake you wont be disappointed. Good Luck!

it creates a water "reservoir" for soon to be mushrooms without over saturating them..

Yeah basically hydrates them more and IMO makes a world of diference between flush sizes. - Oh yeah and you dont need to use a lid either, i personally use a foil base because i need my lids to do more jars.

OK so on the bottom of my container that I will be fruiting in I will have lots of perlite, and then a square of tinfoil with some wet verm on it. Wet like how I make the substrate wet or dripping? How much like a handful or a pile? How much on top?
