Hey, just wondering. Because a half pint, a cup, that's not really a large substrate block is it? Is it better to use this method (substrate blocks) or to just fill the bottom of my container w/ substrate?
Hehe, sorry for posting so many questions, but it takes soooooooo long to get spores when you have to send off w/ snail mail and get them back w/ snail mail Sorry if i'm getting on ppl's nerves.

You're better off with your later method (casing), check the FAQ. You can get .01grams - mass_of_cake*150%

on average you can get 2 to 8 mushrooms per cake. but this depends on many factors.
>Yoruyonaka said: "Is it better to use this method (substrate blocks) or to just fill the bottom of my container w/ substrate?" Read up on the methods and decide which one you think you feel comfortable doing yourself. That is who ultimately will decide anyway. if your looking for yield yes bulk is the way to go. Read on it if you think you can do it give it a shot if not stay with cakes.

I've never seen anybody really find the answer-- they think they have, so they stop thinking. But the job is to seek mystery, evoke mystery, plant a garden in which strange plants grow and mysteries bloom. The need for mystery is greater than the need for an answer." -- Ken Kesey

While you are waiting soooooo long for the spores, take the time to read as much as you can. Go into the FAQ and read up about casing and spawning to bulk substrates. You may want to take a shot at growing with some horse poo!

Richard's cakes happen to be the high end of the spectrum, I've seen some get as little as 2 grams total of cakes...

Yield weight is directly related to substrate weight(except with poo/straw) Half pint sub = Half pint dry mushrooms over the life of the cake And thats "optimum conditions" most people get less

^^ that would be Biological efficiency (actually done by weight of dry substrate to weight of dry mushrooms)
1lb of dry sub will produce 1lb of shrooms, at 100% BE (hard to ahcieve)...but It can be potentially higher then that, so I've read
