i consider this a political topic
just saw that sharper image air purifier commercial again, and for some reason it really rang out, that we are being told to spend $400 to have the luxury of breathing clean air in our homes, car and office. i mean selling clean air is a good idea, but it really is such a shitty thing, to be sold something that really should be free. air, water, land, patents on seeds, there is honestly nothing left to own but the shit we are making...
so why the fuck don't they just build a huge one of those things, like the size of a building in every city?
but then, who would clean that? and where would all of that stuff go? into the water? then what?
burn it? then what?

There's literally a trillion liters of air in a cubic kilometer. If you're going to clean the air you are better off creating a lot of small air purification buildings so that the thickness of the purification layer isn't vastly excessive.
A far better idea, which is being done right now, is to put a filter on anything that pollutes if it is at all possible: car exhausts, factory chimneys, cigarettes, low/no solvent paints, unleaded purified gasoline. The feed of animals on factory farms is even adjusted so that they produce less poo of a less polluting variety and even that the bovines will fart less methane. Human and animal waste is often purified before its released into the enviroment and in fact is treated with microorganisms which turn fixated nitrogen (a source of acid rain) into atmospheric nitrogen again. a lot is being done.
If the energy output of the human race is large enough we'll be able to not just regulate the weather but also to pull all those pollutants out of the air again. The the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide can then be pulled from the air, turned into elementary carbon or polymers and provide us with a synthetic mineral usable to build houses and roads, remineralizing the excess carbon and taking it out of the loop again. For this we'll need to become a Type 1 civilisation (capable of producing the same amount of energy as a whole planet receives) and this has been estimated at being 200 years from now. As I see it we got to put our chips on Conventional Nuclear as a transition energy and then proceed as quickly as possible (within 25 years) to Fusion energy which is inherently clean and inexhaustable, and at the same timer get the mars colony on the road to safeguard Life on Earth from extinction (including cryogenic genebanks and underground deep storage facilities of every scrap of genes, chromosomes and genomes we can get from the current lifeforms, located on several planets and moons.)
Ahem!
After this screaming wild (baking greenhouse gasses into diamond carbon and using that as a base for ultrahard construction concrete is a bit far out at current energy prices and supplies ) but entirely realistic flight of fancy let me get back to the thread: your idea at first glance seems very bizarre but in the not too distant future, if we make that, we're literally able to undo pollution and even put the pollutants to good use.
In te future, if we dont fuck it up too much in the coming few centuries which really need not be, we can purify the air the entire planet breathes. Given enough clean energy (we got a source: Fusion) we can pull the pollutants out of the air and remineralize them into enviromentally inert construction materials.
So in answer to your question: yes. we can take it all back, except for loss of uncatalogued genetic materials of the species we drive into extinction every single day. Humankind has a good shot at the power to become immortal and with it every species we bother to gene-map before we drive it extinct.
If only I could live 1.000 years and watch it all unfold. the period 2000-3000 AD is where the action is ^_^
EDIT: oh in case I sound a little too far out for some of you: here is a source talking about the physics of alien (and our possible future) civilisation, and basically tells us humankind may indeed become immortal, seed itself among the stars, get incomprehensible power and might one day become Deity and create a cosmos. Diamond-based construction concrete is a lot less ambitious, don't you think?
