Need help doing a fall grow...
    #4871336 - 10/30/05 03:44 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

Hey there,
I was hoping I could get some help in doing a small fall grow....I'm sticking with PF cakes (which is the only way I've been successful) and live in the south...and temps in my house are around 68 to 72 degrees. I really don't have a way to get the temp up for the spore growth stage...which I believe is around 82-86 degrees. I can't rely on heating pads or stuff like that because I'm at work and don't want to risk burning the house down. Is it possible to get mycelium to grow in the 68-72 degree range, or is it just a waste of effort ? I've got the spore prints from previous grows and the jars and BRF and verm, but don't want to waste the time, and risk if it's a hopeless plan.

Any help would be appreciated !

(Current stash - 56 grams.....not enough !)

I keep my jars at about 75 and they colonize well. You can probaly still do this but colonization may be a bit slow for you. Mycelium as it grows naturally creates some heat. You could also put them in a shoe box (i put a towel at the bottom it slows heat transfer some it kinda acts as a insulator) and put them on top of your water heater / refridgerator or any other appliance that generates a small amount of heat on a daily basis.
Good luck!

tub in a tub is a pretty safe method, if you think about it. The water itself doesn't get very hot, it will take a ton of heat to melt the plastic/burn down your house. make sure you bolt the fish tank heater down right and your set. If your paranoid put it in a basement around concrete and nothing that can catch fire...

^the plug can spark and cause a fire, but then any other appliance could too. i would follow the above advice or look around for a warmer spot with a thermometer.

you know, i do have this one idea which should work. get a jar of substrate, allow it to contaminate with green mold, seal well. the colonizing bacteria puts off a lot of heat. place contamed jar in center of other jars in small box.

my infected bag was warm to the touch, enough to bring temps up at least 10 degrees in a shoebox. but i suspect heat will only last as long as colonization is possible. in my case--5 to 6 days.

That would leave your jars exposed to too much contam. i personally wouldnt risk it but it does sound like a good idea though.

if the jars are shut, there is no exposure, but still i don't think i would recommend it--not when we have fire and electricity available.

i'm sure your computer heats up to a decent level and you don't mind leaving it on: run ducting from the exhaust port into a small box. if you have a crt monitor, put the box ontop no additional work necessary.

I can't believe somebody suggested a contaminated jar instead of a tub in tub incubator...

Aquarium heaters are getting really expensive these days, eh?

TiT is the cheapest, safest way. As far as sparcs replaced your surge protectors once a year, these things do go bad...also the Heatbomb tech can be used if your tight on space and need to go smaller than a tub

why yes it is, I have frequently incubated spawn bags on my desk, exposure to light more than 70% of the day every day since inoculation, temps were always
in the low 70's, the only problem is that it does take a bit longer to fully
colonize, with light exposure, it risks early pinning...

is it possible to incubate them on top of your monitor, near your furnace or soem other heat source that is generaly going to be used like the water heater?
