Al Qaeda disputes US death toll in Iraq

Al Qaeda disputes US death toll in Iraq

The number of invading troops killed in Iraq is at least 10 times higher than the published toll of 2,000, the Iraqi branch of the Al Qaeda terrorism network says.

"We are not exaggerating when we say that the number of deaths in the ranks of the crusader army is 10 times higher than the 2,000 announced in the pernicious media," the group said in a website statement.

"Their forces have encountered difficulties disposing of the corpses which they are burying in mass graves in the desert, throwing in the rivers, or incinerating."

No evidence is offered for the claims.

Three US soldiers were killed on Saturday in two incidents in Iraq, the US military announced, as two more US servicemen were reported dead in neighbouring Kuwait.

The latest deaths bring to 2,013 the number of US military personnel killed in the Iraq operation since the March 2003 invasion, according to an AFP tally.

That figure closely tallies with the official Pentagon count and the toll figures published by the independent Iraq Coalition Casualty Count website (icasualties.org)

The Pentagon also lists more than 15,000 troops wounded since the start of the war.

They could be right, but I doubt it considering they've been reduced to camping in caves and huts to know anything of the sort.

the oft-quoted figure in the media (currently 2000+) is the # of US military deaths...it does not include blackwater mercenaries..haliburton contractors..etc whom the insurgents do not distinguish from troops...so the actual US death toll is much higher than has been reported..although prolly not nearly tenfold either...

the VC used to camp in caves and huts too...and we almost lost that war...

The deaths of 18,000 civilians would be all over the news, don't ya think?

It's a good point.

So what, maybe 2500-3000 actual dead Americans? that's an out-my-ass guess - anyone have figures, or a better guess?

This link is illustrative for all questions regarding casualties
http://icasualties.org/oif/Civ.aspx

The contractor list is described as partial but is probably pretty close and comes to 278.

Seems to be very excellent source of information, complete and up to date. Interesting bar graphs on Iraqi deaths, both civilian and uniform, for those who contend the insurgency is gaining traction.

it may be a good source for american casualties, but i wouldn't trust its numbers for iraqi casualties.
