Witnessing a murder

Had a dream (a real dream!) where I witnessed a murder. It was a moral dilemma whether to notify the police and then to have to testify and quite possibly endanger my family.
Where would you draw the line between civic duty, personal safety and protecting your family?

That all depends who was doing the killing. If it was the mob, I wouldn't exactly want to get involved in that - that being said, if it was a mafioso killing chances are it would be some other criminal that was being murdered.
But if it was just some thug, or some junkie or drunk doing the killing, I would gladly tell the police.

If it was a powerful man killing someone I didn't know then I wouldn't say anything.
If it was a weak man killing someone I did know I would tell.

If some guy raped and killed a chick I would report it. If some guy killed a rapist in the act, I wouldn't. Get it?
Depends.

Civic duty is very important. If a person won't stand up for the safety of the community then the community has no safety. There is no other alternative.
-------------------- "A warrior is a hunter. He calculates everything. That's control. Once his calculations are over, he acts. He lets go. That's abandon. A warrior is not a leaf at the mercy of the wind. No one can push him; no one can make him do things against himself or against his better judgment. A warrior is tuned to survive, and he survives in the best of all possible fashions." ― Carlos Castaneda

Depends on the ratio between the power of the killer and the quality of relationship in the person killed.

Unless it's a vigilante.

Standing up may not be safe for the community either.

Sounds good and I agree in principle, but if your family was threatened by a gang who had previously murdered witnesses and/or family members, you would be forced to reconsider.

But then you are allowing murderers to roam free in the community where your family lives. Your child or partner could be the next person they murder, whether you testify against them or not.

Isn't this why they have a witness protection program?

You could secretly go after them (and try kill them first) instead of going out in public and jeopardizing people's lives.

I would report them to the police, and then do all in my power to defend my family.

"Standing up may not be safe for the community either."
This is not a practical position. As Veritas pointed out...this is merely allowing killers to roam freely amongst your familly members.

"You could secretly go after them (and try kill them first)"
Then you would be a murderer and subject to the penalty of law.

No I wouldn't as my familly is in danger either way...in any case I got way to big a mouth to keep that kind of shit secret.
