Beginner: Light & the Incubation Period
    #4854187 - 10/26/05 10:41 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, I had a few questions.

I'm starting to grow soon, maybe in a couple weeks get the process going. But I am recently running into some questions and finding contradictory answers.

I will be growing using the PF Teks, so BRF and vermiculite.. and I'll be making cakes instead of casing.

My question concerns the INCUBATION process, where the jars are left alone and the white mycelium grows.

Most of the PF Teks on this site call for indirect light on the jars. Here's some of the stuff I read:

* "Indirect light is all that is required."
* "Indirect sunlight (= the light that lights up a room because it's day time out) or a low wattage lamp(cool white fluorescent lamp is ideal, incandescent lamp is less suitable) for 4-12 hours a day is sufficient."

Reading the forum, however, it seems like people say to leave them alone in the dark.. people ask whether or not it is okay or not to check on them because they would expose them to light.
Also, I have read that light can cause premature pinning.

ANY insight at all will help me. And I appreciate any responses. Relate with your own experiences, that will be best I think.

during the incubation period you dont want them to be in the light. but if you peak in to check on them every once and a while it wont hurt them. you dont need a big light just enough so you can see in the room, like if you can see your cakes in the FC then thats enough. i gess thats a way to say it.. you want your temps for incubation in the 80-85 degree range. hope that helps dome

I leave my jars in a warm dark place, I check on them every other day or so. The jars see light for about 10-15 minutes when I am checking them out. I have never had problems. I find looking at them everyday is a lot like watching a pot of water boil.

during incubation...
you don't want any light.
checking your jars isn't a problem.

during fruiting...
you want lighting or indirect sunlight.

if you intend to fruit them intact, as cakes,,
then there is NO reason to keep them
in the dark.
you want pinning as soon as they are colonized
so let them have light.

Oh...

I do intend to fruit cakes.

Are you saying, after the cakes have formed.. give them light? or during the whole process of mycelium growth(the incubation stage)?

exposing fully colonized jars to light will result in INVITRO pinning, meaning mushrooms will try to grow whlie theyre still in the jar. heres a tip, listen to everything MODS say (roadkill).

1) leave jars in warm, DARK place until they are fully white / fully colonized
2) once jars are colonized, u can birth them (transfer them) to your fruiting chamber which has cooler temps, high relative humidity. THIS IS WHEN YOU EXPOSE THEM TO LIGHT. 12 hours a day light, 12 hours a day dark. rather than colonizing, the mycelium will change its objective to generate primordia (mushrooms).

bottom line, like road kill said.

warm dark while colonizing in jar
cooler, lighted, once jars are birthed to begin fruiting.

P.S. yes it is ok to expose the jars to a little light as you check their stage of colonization, but try to MINIMIZE the amnt of light they sustain, because i checked mine about once every 3 days for 5 minutes at a time, and that was enuf light for one or two of the jars to start pinning INVITRO!

I don't want to make another thread so I'll ask right here:

When I check on my jars every other day, would it make a difference to be using the artificial light from the light bulb in my room, or should I be using natural light that lights up the the room during the day? Or does that really have no significance at all?

Cus if the light in my room only produces warm colors, then the mushies won't respond to them if I'm right...?
