Poll: Bush would lose an election if held this year

Tuesday, October 25, 2005; Posted: 3:37 p.m. EDT (19:37 GMT)

President Bush would not get re-elected if an election were held this year, according to a CNN poll.

(CNN) -- A majority would vote for a Democrat over President Bush if an election were held this year, according to a CNN/USA Today/Gallup Poll released Tuesday.

In the latest poll, 55 percent of the respondents said that they would vote for the Democratic candidate if Bush were again running for the presidency this year.

Thirty-nine percent of those interviewed said they would vote for Bush in the hypothetical election.

The latest poll results, released Tuesday, were based on interviews with 1,008 adults conducted by telephone October 21-23.

In the poll, 42 percent of those interviewed approved of the way the president is handling his job and 55 percent disapproved. In the previous poll, released October 17, 39 percent approved of Bush's job performance -- the lowest number of his presidency -- and 58 percent disapproved.

However, all the numbers are within the poll's sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points, so it's possible that the public's opinion has not changed at all.

More than half, 57 percent, said they don't agree with the president's views on issues that are important to them, while 41 percent said their views are in alignment with those of Bush on important issues.

Democrats preferred on issues
On separate issues, a majority of those questioned felt the Democrats could do a better job than Republicans at handling health care (59 percent to 30 percent), Social Security (56 percent to 33 percent), gasoline prices (51 percent to 31 percent) and the economy (50 percent to 38 percent).

Forty-six percent also believed Democrats could do better at handling Iraq, while 40 percent said the GOP would do better.

In 2003, 53 percent said Republicans would better handle Iraq and only 29 percent believed the Democrats would do better.

The only issue on which Republicans came out on top was in fighting terrorism: 49 percent said the GOP is better at it, while 38 percent said the Democrats are.

And there was a dramatic shift downward in the latest poll, compared with September, in the percentage of people who said that it was a mistake to send U.S. troops to Iraq.

This time, 49 percent said it was a mistake, versus 59 percent who felt that way last month.

Bush would still beat Gore or Kerry.

George Bush has never lost a Presidential election and he never will.

I don't know why people seem so concerned about his poll numbers. I have an inside scoop that says he won't run again in 08. Bank on it.

So why the fixation? We went to war three years ago. People on the left still like to debate whether we should go to war, even though we have kids on the ground and have been there for years. George Bush got elected twice, and he can't get elected again. Yet people on the left like to bitch about both elections and point to public opinion polls and hold mythical public opinion elections. I think that people on the left should be more forward thinking. I think they need to find a vision for America and work on advancing their own agenda.

I think that we have had an elaborate public relations campaign run mainly by the mainstream media against George W. Bush. But getting people pissed about Bush isn't the same as getting people to believe in Democrats. Democrats need a plan, and they need new leadership.

Were any of the Bush haters on this board excited about Kerry? I have never met one person in my life excited about Kerry. Let alone people like Pelosi, Ted Kennedy, Harry Reid, or Howard Dean.

Who is the most respected liberal in America? Daniel Patrick Moynihan is dead. Who has vision on the left? I would like somebody to tell me.

CNN Poll: Bush Would Lose Election or Be Arrested
by Scott Ott

(2005-10-25) -- If a presidential election were held this year, George Bush would either lose to an anonymous Democrat or win and be jailed for violating the term-limit provision found in the 22nd amendment to the Constitution, according to the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup/Nabisco/Toys R Us Poll released Tuesday.

In the hypothetical matchup between the increasingly-unpopular two-term president and an unnamed Democrat, 75 percent of respondents said they liked the views, character and personal hygiene habits of the unnamed opponent better than those of the illegally-incumbent president.

In related news, a hypothetical CNN poll shows that 95 percent of Americans would give a pollster misleading answers "just to jack up the results."

The make-believe phone survey of 832 Americans also revealed that 97 percent of respondents strongly agree with the statement: "I'm sorry we can't come to the phone right now, but if you leave a message, we'll get right back to you."

I think Bush thought "Wow, a second term! To hell with PR skills!" Honestly, since the last election Bush has had some of the worst communication and leadership skills in the last hundred years. I don't know what the guy is thinking, like being complacent and repeating the same things over and over is going to help him.

I actually haven't seen much change in his behavior. It took 4 years, but I think people are finally starting to wake up.

He didn't get cocky and stupid like with Clinton.
The public is getting (sorta) smart and angry like with Nixon.

I do think it is a result of the endless carping more than anything else. The NY Times and WaPo keep hammering the same bullshit over and over again and a lie repeated enough gets traction.

Yeah, this works both ways. The press repeated so much bullshit during the Clinton administration about murders and various other misdeeds, that it eventually became true in the court of public opinion.

Turns out, all the guy got was a blowjob.

I don't think more than 1% of the population thought he murdered Hubbel. I do think that more than 1% of the population thinks he put his hands on some women who didn't want him too though. Don't you?
