some interesting finds today from NH (10-24-05)

The season is almost over and I have no idea what I will do with my self. here are some pics of a couple of things found today. third weekend in a row with lots of rain, and one pretty good frost during the middle of last week.
armillaria mellea- honey mushroom. quite a bit of this around.. I think it is a sub-species of honey. it is quite different in appearence to what was fruiting around here a month ago. honey mushrooms have got to be one of the most tenacious and adapted fungal species.
I thought these were really old lobsters at first (h. lactiflourum). but they are not. though very old I belive it to be hypomyces luteovirens, on a russula host. I have also seen this on lactarius.
This next shot. I'm not sure what the one on the left is. I picked it because it was shiny, and there was lots of it. I'm at a loss at id ing it yet. it also smells just like a hydnellum. (which probably doesn't help much if you've never smelled a hydnellum) but if you have, you'll know what i mean. The middle and right pictures are Hygrophorus conicus and hygrophorus cuspidatus. (I think.)
here's a neat one. I find this from time to time. entoloma abortivum
heres a new one for me.. Found these mostly covered by duff, under hemlock, very close to a run off area. the inside is like close celled foam. they don't smell much either. Is it some kind of truffle? I'm pretty sure it's not a puffball. so this one is up for grabs. Any ideas?
I sneezed on this branch, do you think I have the flu? just kidding. I believe this to be exidia recisa.
and lastly, a few matsutake. (total for season,63 pounds, so far)
have a good evening- norm

it's pretty variable. I average $15/ pound U.S. which is probably the cheapest you can get them anywhere in the world. I spend most of my time trying to educte chefs as to what they are.
I also give lots and lots of mushrooms away.

unfortunately the pics will slow to nothing soon. I will however keep looking and posting until the ground is frozen.
by mid- november I will know if I am building a mushroom farm in Maryland. 4,000 pounds per week. king oyster, blue oyster, bearshead, pholiota adiposa, and maitake. to start

yes of course. I will probably post quite a bit in gourmet and medical. once my picking season is over.
If I am able to start a farm. I will be able to post lots and lots of pics. of the whole process.
I will also be dedicating an enitre grow room 12' x 30' x 10' to experimentals. There are several species of mushrooms that are said cannot be cultivated. I'm very interested in at least experimenting. for example. chicken mushroom, sparassis crispa (cultivated in japan), morels, blewitt (is this cultivated in europe?) I may also branch into medicinals as well, reishi and such. Who knows, the options are limitless in my opinion.

thanks for the link. The only ones I have seen before were baught from europe, and they stayed fresh in a 35 degree f. for over three weeks. chefs that i delivered them to also seemed to like them. I have yet to see any available that are cultivated in the US.

I haven't seen any grown in the US either. They are pretty easy to grow in small patches outside though.

Nice pictures man. I originally joined this message board only interested in psychoactive mushrooms. I now find myself interested in all kinds of Fungi. Posts like this inspire me to go out and hunt! Keep up the good work and best of luck with your farm!
