Vivid red and yellow, amanita (?) in Scottish highlands
    #4844717 - 10/24/05 05:02 AM (18 years, 5 months ago)

All the clues seem to lead me to amanita, but it
doesn't seem to match any of the pictures in various
guides. This may mean that any of my descriptions
are suspect/misunderstood I guess.

Most striking feature is the cap with a red centre
surrounded by yellow

Cap 14 cm
Bright red centre (6 cm) changing to bright yellow
Waxy/slimy. Gills closely packed, free or nearly
free. Cap close to level on top.

Spore print: not much success, but if anything it
was cream/white.

Stem: 18 cm, with ring and volva

Habitat: in grass, which also has heather; peaty
soil. Scottish highlands. Seen 20 October.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Looks like a perfectly normal and healthy specimen of Amanita Muscaria to me

We have some fine specimens of Amanita Muscaria too, but they don't really look the same. The yellow band, the absence of white dots. The red looked richer too. And slimier. Is this all normal variation? A web search shows something like it on http://www.nifg.org.uk/amanita_muscaria2.jpg but it still doesn't look that close.

As the mushrooms age, the red loses some of its intensity and gets a 'washed out' look. The white specks disappear due to rain, physical contact (brushing) or can be absent from the start. These features don't in fact contradict the id
