Innoculation problems :(

My first time. I'm going with rye grain. I read to use 1/2 water and 1/2 rye grain, but i really thought it would be better to use verm too. So i did 3 1/2 pint jars 1/2 rye & 1/2 water. 3 jars 1/2 rye & 1/2 water with verm on top and I did the last 3 jars with a rye, verm and water mixture, then put verm on top.

*When it came time to innoculate. The rye,verm,mixture was very easy to innoculate, but the other jars were horrible. I could barely get my needle through. I feel like with out the verm the rye packs to tight. I even got rye stuck up in m needle and had to sterilize a sewing needle to get it unstuck. I couldn't even draw up on the syringe or press hard on it. The shit was stuck!

I'd use less rye and water, but i thought you had to fill it to the top. I didn't pack it down, it kinda packed itself. What should I do when i pressure cook more jars tonight?
I was only able to innocelate 2 today.

straight-

the vermiculite holds oxygen and water and keeps the cake from becoming a solid chunk that the mycelium can't penetrate.

you might try brown rice instead of rye, too. i guess it's still debatable, but it seems many have had better luck with brf.

ya, my rye grain was a solid chunk. i'm experimenting with differnt substrates, rye and brf, thanks :)
