GOING INSANE!!! (and some shitake q's)
    #4788731 - 10/11/05 07:24 PM (18 years, 5 months ago)

WHY CANT I FIND WHERE TO GET HARDWOOD SHAVINGS/SAWDUST?!!?
where do you guys get your stuff????
and i was readin on mycotopia that shiitake can be grown on straight wbs, but they usually end up mutated.
and apparently adding some shavings/chips/sawdust fixes the problem.
any body tried a mix of wbs and sawdust, or even wbs period?

especially tricky in UK - i ended up looking up fish-smokers on the internet, and finally got 25kg of oak sawdust posted to me from scotland.

other sources are furniture shops, cabinet-makers, lumber yards, petshops (tends to only be crappy sawdust full of resins though) and tree surgeons. if you're in USA, you can buy barbecue pellet fuel too. try the net or your local yellow pages after you choose a source, for outlets.

Shirley! You can't find hardwood chips/sawdust/planings over there from cabinet makers?

I called a few in my area and they seem to get requests like this all the time--it's just trash to them.

well my step dad actually works at a furniture making place, thing :P
but they treat all there wood before it even comes to them with chems and shit, so i figured it would be not so grand for shitakes.

You can call around and ask the places--each of the ones I called had untreated wood shavings, chips, etc.  It depends on what kind of woodworking they're doing.  I think most cabinet makers use untreated wood.  Dunno, tho.

i must say i feel stupid that i didn't know you could use wood pellets!

im assuming they must be simmered, and not just soaked, to absorb sufficiant water i mean.

thanks!

It takes awhile to find good hardwood shavings.
But - they are out there.

I finally found a woodworking shop & have then SAVE the hardwood sawdust/shavings for me.

I have been thinking about trying cellulose based cat litter; I have found a brand that is 70% cellulose (from pulp) and 30% kaolin and CaCO3. Has anyone tried anything similar?
