 Constructing a flow hood

I would like to spend around $300 or less total for all the materials and the type of design I am thinking about is one with an enclosed
work area, possible removable. I can very probably get a squirrel cage blower for free from the recycling depot. That leaves the HEPA filter and the wood etc. My real concern is what size and efficiency of HEPA filter should I get? I would like to be able to fit a 23 quart pressure cooker inside and be able to open it.

24" X 24" Laminar flow filter with a 500 to 600 cfm blower. That should give you 150 feet per minute flow(air speed) at 1" of static pressure.

roger, i have a question for you. last year I picked up a ceiling unit hepa filter 2ft x 4.5ft long. one side is open (where you can see the filter) and the other side is encased in a metal frame with an intake hole of roughly 14inches. how could I go about setting this up as a flowhood?
since its a cieling unit, and one side is already encased, i was wondering if i could turn it into a downfall flowhood of which i could work under it as opposed to in front of it. also, since there is an opening at the top where it is encased, could it be possible to rig a centrifugal blower right over the hole?

You could rig a SQF in a box (with a pre-filtered intake) & connect the exit to the intake on the ceiling unit with some sort of modified galvanized stove pipe.
This F/H was built from the ceiling unit below.
The only difference being - it has a built in fan.
I built it so that I could insert an AA 941 sterilizer into the working area, and still have adequate work space.

i was hoping you'd reply. i've seen your vertical flowhood before and thought i'd reproduce something similar. do you really have no problems at all with yours? I was thinking that maybe the airflow wouldn't come out laminar because of the awkward dimensions of the filter.

Yes, in fact I did have a problem with it. But resolved it quickly.
I placed a piece of Plexiglas over 1/2 the front (piano hinged on the upper edge), to help maintain laminar flow, when large objects are inside the work area.
Other than that, no problems at all.
With the encased filter you have, I would suggest building yours horizontal - rather than vertical (like mine).
For that matter, if you could find flexible hose large enough to run from a SQL cage fan - in a prefiltered box - to the filter, you could have them as separate units - that connect together, with the SQL fan sitting on the floor - under a table that the filter & hood top & side walls set on.
That would make it more portable, should you have to move it (sometime). Mine would be a bitch to move - as it is rather large, heavy & one piece construction.
Let me know how it goes - whatever you do.

yes, i was planning on putting a piece of glass over the hood anyway. kinda make it look professional and such. i think using piping of some sort would be a great idea except for the fact that i can't find tubing that is that wide.

How wide is the hole? I would guess --> 10 inch.
There is galvanized & SS stove pipe & elbows that size.

Call around to DUCT WORK places.
There might be some round size in that range.
If all else fails - a sheet metal shop could build you a reducer - to some standard size.
