my pit bull's pet donkey has a 10 gallon aquarium set up and wonders if there is supposed to be a smell when its colonizing. he says its not a strong smell but he can't really describe what it smells like. also how long should it take a 10 gal. to fully colonize so he can add the casing layer? Its been a few weeks and he says it looks like it's making progress slowly but he didn't think it was supposed to take that long. He's a newbie and really would appreciate any help that anyone could give.

humn did you use perlite in the aquarium? if you did, the smell is perlite slowly rotting. if you didn't, it could be contam in the jars. check every jar for contam, also if it's already been a few weeks and jars are not completed yet, it could be that you did not use enought water while preparing the substrate or the temperature is too hot in the aquarium. give more details if you can ta lem

well i'm not exactly sure if there is perlite or not cause i bought a substrate mix but i'm pretty sure i remember the ingredient list having perlite in it. also i didn't use seperate jars. There is a humidity base on the bottom of the aquarium bottom and then a substrate layer and then used a syringe to innoculate in differant spots on the substrate layer. there are spots of white everywhere and it is slowly growing into more. My friend is also going to start jars using the pf tec cause he still has 1.5 syringes left and they are from the hawkseye so he knows they are good. The temp stays between 78 and 86 degrees which is a lot of fluctuating but they are in an unheated closet and the only thing to keep them warm is an aquarium heater and some blankets. do you think the aquarium is a lost cause or could i still salvage something. Thanks for any help you can give.

well actually its pretty much the pf tek except the aquarium is like one huge jar. you have to sterilize it and keep it air tight so no contams can get in just like with the jars. i read about it on a web site.

uh, that doens't seem to be too right... so you used the aquarium like a huge jar? that would get contams in like in a couple of seconds, and fuck everything up. you can't do that, you need to use sealed jars...

I know exactly what you are talking about...you went and bought shit from Mushroommagic.com, the 10 gallon aquarium kit.whats funny about that kit is that it all you do is lay down a layer of perlite....microwave the substrave..let it cool and flop it in the aquarium...squirt in a spore syringe and turn on the heater they give you.......I did the same thing my first time....HUGE MESSY GREEN MISTAKE...i was totally ripped off on that one...it was like 50 bucks for a bag of brown rice flour, some verm and a little bag of perlite

Yep, chuck it & get some jars (damn cheap and easy to find if you're in the US....lucky bastards!)....also, doesn't the colonising substrate need to be in jars so there's CO2, until they're near 100%???....think i read that somewhere...;)
