Linux help please!

Alright here's the deal, i have a dead windows PC. I get the infamous NT based error "NTOSKRNL.EXE missing or corrupt" on bootup. The PC is running WinXP Pro on one large NTFS volume. This happened right after i booted following a defrag.
I've tried a whole lot of solutions found here: http://www.windowsitpro.com/articles/index.cfm?articleid=14722&cpage=1
Since nothing worked, i decided to save the important files off the HD, and format. However, saving these few folders of documents has proved to be hindered by none other than satan (or equivalent) himself.
Booting a 128MB USB jump drive with NTFS4DOS, i can access the files, but long names are discarded, along with the fact that the 'copy' DOS command does not want to copy entire directories. I tried copying 'xcopy' from windows over, but that requires winxp to run, i cant find a DOS version. I cant use DOS commands to copy over like 1000 documents one by one. That would take me forver.
So some light shines on me and i descover KNOPPIX. http://www.knopper.net/knoppix/index-en.html
Linux based self contained OS/Boot CD. Yay, now i can browse the internet on my 'dead' pc! Cool.
Did it detect my USB drive? Yup! Did it show it in my drives? No, that would be too helpfull to me. And satan pwns my ass. Ok ok, i'll try n access my network from Knoppix. Does it detect the network? Yup! Can access/send files across? Nope!
All my files are intact and happily sitting there. I'd like to save them to my USB drive or send it across the network to my other PC. I've been bugged day after day to get the PC working again.
Please help! im gonna throw this fucking thing out the window!
(knoppix v3.9 btw)

Your might try mounting your usb drive, if you haven't already. You would do that as follows:
su mkdir /mnt/usbstick mount /dev/sda1 -t vfat /mnt/usbstick
You should then be able to see your usbstick.
If your other pc is also a Windows box, you will need something like samba to talk to it, I think. I can't remember what all Knoppix has but it should have Kbear or gftp for connecting for file sharing.
Forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know. From your post I couldn't tell your experience with the wonderful world of Linux.

so, are you able to mount your windows drive? if so, then you have several options besides using a usb pen drive.
have you tried just burning a data disc? knoppix has k3b - so that is what you'd use. you could also have a friend receive all your files via AIM (using gaim) and then have him/her send it all back to you once you've reinstalled your OS.
I also recommend playing around with linux. you might like it way better than windows. I used to use XP exclusively, but now I use linux 100%.

> su
BAD!!!
You should never ever run 'su' without giving the full path to the binary. I have gained root on systems by exploiting this feature.

hey bio, how about you slave your hard drive off another one and just drag your files over. then you could burn, email, ftp, etc whatever you want and not risk losing anything.

Thanks to all for the help.
I managed to gain access to my USB before i checked back here. There's no icon on the desktop still, but it is now mounted, and i can access it. I found it sumhow after looking around under /media: (or sumsuch directory, sorry i dont have direct access to the PC right now) it was under /dev/uba.
I was actualy thinking of running knoppix on my other PC on the LAN to experiment with samba, see if i could get into the @home network. Then i remembered that my CD drive on this PC isnt hooked up. x_o;
bi0: I run knoppix of the CD. Cant burn. ;P
As to how much experience i have with linux.... well, lets just say day 1 was when I burned that Knoppix CD. I might one day poke around with linux a bit, see what its about, but right now im too busy with other things in life to re-learn an OS. Looks good tho!
Thanks to everone again.

To get the windows files onto the usb thing, run as root
mkdir /mount/winblows mount /dev/hda1 /mount/winblows cp /mount/winblows /dev/uba
