What would be overkill?
    #469080 - 11/25/01 09:22 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

With a raw setup (no humidifiers, hgs, etc.), AFOAF has succeeded in maintaining proper conditions for fruiting for a few different strains using perlite alone. She's working on the EQs presently and is wondering 'what would be overkill'.... They're double-cased w/ verm AND living in a perlite-humidified terrarium.... she's even employing the drinking straw tek to a few, just to experiment. But what is the cakes' threshold for humidity? And what would symptoms of overkill be?

The humidification should be fine as long as proper airation is there. The straw tek might not be a bad idea but she probably won't need to add much water to the straw until a flush is over. I think its a good idea to add a little less than X amount of mL to the casing as 9/10 of the wet yield in grams of the mushies, as that is much of the water the shroomies stole from the casing when they fruited.

So for proper aeration, would it be advised to step up from being so basic and invest in a $4 computer fan at Radio Shack to install in the terrarium? I've read of a good idea that involves installing the fan into one end of the terr. and placing a HEPA or good disposable filter over the outside...

I suppose it will work, but if you are using a computer fan, since they run on DC current you will need a regulated 12VDC or 5VDC power supply depending on the type of fan you purchase, so it will bring your overall cost higher. What most prefer to do is purchase an aquarium pump ( one with variable output perhaps) and put this in a sealed box like a gladware or whatever with a filter disc installed into the lid, and run the outputs of the pump either under the perlite with a bubble stone, or just dry air into the top of the terrarium.

Sorry to ask something that may be standard knowledge to you, but where does one get the filter discs? And is there a good source describing the setup you just described so it'll be done right (by my friend)?

Go to this link

http://www.psykedelbok.se/MMGG.HTM#Spores There is great info on air bubblers . Also make sure you poke a few small holes near the bottom just above the perlite.this will allow the CO2 to escape. My fruits are a lot fatter since i went to the aquarium pump..good luck
