USPS Tyvek envelope

I just received the USPS TYVEK envelope and expected something else. I polyfill stuff of the inside. Is the outside of the envelope what I use? This laminate paper feeling envelope is breathable?
I was planning on using it for the lid of quart jars filled with WBS. Do I just cut the outside of the envelope to the size I want to use?

Uh - What does that mean?
Yes. That laminate paper thing is breathable (as long as it actually says DuPont TYVEK on it) The Tyvek is a fine plastic. It has pores big enouh for air.
Its not the most efficient thing - mind you, but it works.
Theres a pictorial someone did of what they use - I can't remember the post atm.
I believe it was placing the tyvek on the jar, then the lid with the 4 holes in it, then put the band on to secure it, and then they put a couple of coffee filters on top of that secured by a rubber band. Worked for them.
Someone help me out and find that damned thread?

Edit: These are STRICTLY for shipping purposes

It does that Tyvek on the package. Is just having that as the lead good enough for PF jar? I am worried about the jar drying out.

No, using the Tyvek alone as a lid will allow too much gas exchange and your jars will definately dry out. On the other hand, if you tried to double up and use 2 sheets of Tyvek it would restrict too much exchange.
I'd suggest following that diagram or using some polyfill if your fedup with the Tyvek.

tyvek sucks IMO. to me it wasnt very breathable. when i put it up to the vacum hose it restricted airflow, and there was now sign of any airflow through the tyvek.
pollyfill or filter discs are the way to go. i used pollyfill because it is very cheap. and it works extrmely well.
just my opinion some, people love tyvek.

Tyvek works good as a substitute for polyfill on the bottom half of a double tub. I still use polyfill for the top part. Tyvek allows C02 to escape, but is not real good for fresh air exchange.

Not true. I've never used a single layer of tyvek that I can recall, always 2 sheets.

I don't think this test is applicable to the application. Air flow is irrelvant to jars. You don't need air blowing through your jars, you just need gas to exchange. It's fine with me if you don't like tyvek though, i'm not knocking your opnion, just saying I don't see the relevancy of this test.
whitebunny, what does this mean?

umm, you kind of need for air to be able to flow through the tyvek in order to actually have a "gas exchange". if no air can get through then there is no "gas" "exchanged".

he meant that air flow rate is mostly irrelevant, so long as there is some (even minimal exchange). it even seemed to me like that didn't need additional clarification.

look, "Air flow is irrelvant" means "Air flow is irrelvant" . im sorry if either i didnt take his post the right way, or he didnt post YOUR opinion the way you thought i should see it. thats just how shit is.

Yeah, I did mean "airflow is irrelevant". Air flow is not gas exchange, and there need not be any airflow to allow gas exchange.
Think of a cell membrane. Impedes the flow of fluids. Yet fluids will cross the membrane under the right conditions. You wouldn't really say that a cell membrane allows for "fluid flow", but you would say that it allows for "fluid exchange".
You can't blow through the filters on autoclave bags (that's why they pop if you pc them sealed) yet they obviously allow plenty of gas exchange.
It is ok if you don't like tyvek for whatever reason. I'm just pointing out that no airflow does not equal the necessary exchange of gasses can't occur. Like you said in your post, some people love tyvek. They wouldn't if it didn't do it's job of allowing gas exchange.
