Are diesel engines harder and/or more costly to maintain?
    #4639394 - 09/09/05 07:28 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

Than a gas engine? I will be selling my car relatively soon and buying a VW TDI Jetta or Beetle.

One of my brothers who used to be a medic told me one of the mechanics he worked with that maintains the ambulances said diesels are a bitch to maintain. He also told me they are much more costly to get parts or for labor when getting it repaired.

I've searched the internet and can't really find anything laying out the differences in maintenance between gas and diesel engines. The only differences I know of are diesels require oil changes every 5,000 miles, and they last a helluva lot longer than gas engines.

Anybody able to help me out?

good post.....hopefuly it recieves some feedback as i am on my way to saving up for a deisel engine vehicle and converting it to biodeisel as well as straight up vegetable oil.  i dont have an answer for you as i am still doing research on it myself.  slowly but surely.  considering the fact that they last a hell of alot longer i would assume it dont cost so much to maintain.  as far as doin the maintenance yourself, well, im not a mechanic, but, with the right tools, mechanics is a kinda cant go wrong job as long as ur willing to put the time, money, and go-jo into it.

This website says that getting 250,000 miles on a diesel engine without any repairs is "normal".

Seems to me if I buy a used TDI with less than 100,000 miles on it I should be good.

I guess I should really talk to one of my other brothers that works as head mechanic at a local golf course.

the cost of repairing a diesel engine is higher, but diesels usually require less maintainence. which is less expensive in the long run?

in most cases, if i had the choice between a diesel and gas engine in any given vehicle, i'd go with the diesel.

Exactly what I thought. The longer endurance of the engine, combined with the money I save not paying for gas, should balance out when the time comes that I do need a repair.

Aside from normal gas engine maintenance, which is a piece of cake, I can't imagine their being much else to worry about except for taking care in cold weather with starting/shutting down the engine.
