GLOVEBOX humidity question
    #4634090 - 09/08/05 02:15 PM (18 years, 6 months ago)

I saw roadkills glovebox and he has a pvc fitting w/ a filter up at the top of one of the sides.  i was like wtf.  i hope this isnt necessary.  he stated that the alcohol and lysol needs some place to go or else humidity builds up.  will this increase in humidity thwart my efforts to remain steril or is it because the humidity fogs up the viewing window, or both?  mine doesnt have one :frown:

No. It's not there to maintain sterility. It's there so that the vapors dont fog up your vision, and also, it is thought (known?) that vapors and residues from cleaning agents such as Lysol can cause mycological stallings and possible mutation. Your not gonna want that residue all over your spores, agar dishes, or whatever. Alcohol and Bleach is okay in my experience. But, I could be totally wrong though.

Oh, I forgot another use of the "pipe". If he uses a flame technique of sterilization, he's not gonna want to ignite a lamp, butane torch, or lighter in a bin full of combustible vapors, hehe.

ive heard of mutations from lysol before. maybe i will lysol it only a while before i seal in some bleach and alcohol. i wont be using gloves so i guess the vapors can vent out of the arm holes. it isnt safe for the myc to be exposed to lysol?

You don't have to use EXACTLY the same setup. Cut/drill/melt a hole on the side of your GB and tape a piece of Tyvek over it or stuff it with polyfill. You don't need PVC or a fancy filter.

Have you ever read the can dude? It kills 99.99% of mold, mildew and bacteria. Mycelium falls somewhere in there. YES, it will kill the living shit out of your myc! :smirk:

And what do you mean your not using gloves? That defeats the purpose of a glovebox then. You dont want ANY gaseous exchange between the exterior, and interior of your setup.

im duct taping my arms to the pvc fittings, no air exchange.  have you ever tried to grip jars that are soaked in bleach with the gloves on?  i fumbled around with jars so fucking much.  they were open for so long.  :frown:  without protection i can just stick it in there and let it all go inside and get 100 percent of the feel.  alcohol on the hands ofcourse.

you can put on some thin latex gloves for additional sterility, which will not impede your feel of objects.

fuckit man I have two large open square holes for my glovebox. I just stick my arms through, sometimes even forgetting to wash my hands. Hell I'm lazy. Hasn't hurt me so far. Maybe I am lazy and lucky? I funble like a retard with agar dishes and they come out spick-and-span.

Yup, I must be lucky

Peace

so lysol and bleach shouldnt go near the gb post sealing? im thinking wipe everything down with antibac soap, then lysol, then seal in well cleansed bathroom. put rubbing alcohol in gb w/ a rag and wipe everything down inside while sealed. spray some oust air sanitzer in gb. then begin transfers. sound good? any suggestions?

yes, but have you ever watched a baby sit unprotected in front of UV lights? No. I haven't either. But if you can only imagine what it would do to us humans...try having yourself sealed in a plastic box and having a bunch of bastards stick a can of lysol up your ass. I mean, wouldn't you be angry?

but even a bottle of rubbing alcohol or bleach up my ass, which this guy claims is safe, would probably kill me

Its not that lysol will really kill your myc, its just a common thought that lysol residue can cause mutations.
