Synthetic Filter Discs, Jar Preparation and Sterilization

Primary Materials: ? Pint Plastic Canning Jars (One-Piece, Polypropylene) 50mm Synthetic Filter Discs Substrate (Vermiculite, Brown Rice Flour)
I. Jar Preparation - a. Drill a 1 in. hole in the center of the lid for Synthetic Filter Disc: i. Is a 1 in. hole too large? Or unnecessary? ii. What type of drill bit should be used?
b. Drill four small inoculation holes along the outer edge of the lid. c. Seal each of the four inoculation holes with electrical tape. d. Fill jars with substrate and a 1 in. layer of dry vermiculite.
e. Insert Synthetic Filter Disc: i. Where should one place a disc when using one-piece lids? ii. If beneath the lid, how would one keep the disc in place? iii. What effect would water have on the disc (ex. sterilizing in boiling water)? iv. How would one prevent water from seeping into the dry vermiculite layer?
f. Assemble Jars.
Any advice on the matter would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, ShroomNoob03

I would have gone with the free Tyvek envelopes from the post office myself and just cut them to size. This thread may help you out though.

I dont even fool with filter discs or stuff like that anymore. My supplies, canning jar, aquarium air tubing, polyfill, and gasket maker. Self healing injection sites are the shizznitty.

Self healing injection sites? How does that work?
If one doesn't use synthetic filter discs, how else could one achieve a good gas exchange with One-Piece plastic lids?
Thanks again, ShroomNoob03

Don't get stuck on the filter discs. Tyvek and polyfill work the same and provide gas exchange. Fungusman is using polyfill inside of the tube you see sticking out of the jar. See it? This provides enough gas exchange. In your case, I would drill two holes in the lid. 1 larger hole for air exchange and 1 smaller hole just big enough for your syringe to inject through. Put the filter underneath the lid. Cover the tops of the jars with foil when you PC so that water doesn't drip into the holes. When you inject the jars, you will pierce the filter. After you inject the jar, cover the injection hole with tape. DONE!
