Building strong nails

I finally broke my lifelong habit of nail biting, and they're growing out again. The problem is that they are coming in really weak. Doing simple things like opening a pocket knife, they bend and flex almost to the point of breaking off. It sucks.
Do those gelatin supplements work for building stronger nails? Would taking calcium daily help?

I've personally never had any luck with supplements, although I've tried many of them. My nails are also paper-thin, and they peel if allowed to grow too long. couple that with the fact that they're spade-shaped, and I'm pretty much doomed nail-wise.
Let me know if you find anything that does work.

As long as you are getting your daily required amount of calcium, they should start to grow back nice and strong. Making sure you get enough iron (100% DV is all you need) also helps with the health of your nailbeds, I believe. If you eat meat you probably need to worry a lot less about iron.
Great job breaking a habit! That's not easy. Just don't start it again.
Peace

I wish I could quit picking/biting my nails. Some days my figners look like they were tied down and maimed for torture's sake. It's terrible.

I know, mine were embarassing too. It took me two weeks to stop doing it, but like any bad habit, it's only a matter of time breaking it.
Oh, and thanks for the responses everyone. Looks like calcium is the best route to go for now.

you might want to cut them and let them grow back a few times.
i had locks, and when i shaved my head, the hair growing back was considerably weakened. what i had to do was cut it a few times and let it grow back (i've actually only cut it once since... :-D). i figure it would be the same for nails, since they're both made from keratine, and seem to be quite similar.
so yea, clip your nails a few times.
oh, btw, milk is over-rated. you can get calcium, without the growth hormone (cows produce milk for their offspring to help them grow. the magic ingredient is insulin-like growth factor-1, aka IGF-1) from most dark green vegetables (spinache, dark lettuce, etc)

Tough nails are all about the diet, man. Eat like a beast (healthy foods of course, try 40/40/20 protein, carbs, fat) and make sure you're active. I've always had tough as shit nails, before even working out and jazz.

How did you quit biting your nails? It's something I've done since I was like 4 and I'm 18 and never let a nail grow longer than I can bite them. I've never even considered stopping this.

drink milk and lots of it. I have nails of iron and they grow like weeds. I need to use a heavy duty nail clipper since the standard small version will sometimes not work.

Calcium intake is not related to strength of nails. Protein is. Your fingernails and toenails are composed of a protein called keratin.
So just make sure you're getting a sufficient amount of protein in your diet.

You are probably right. Milk does have a pretty good amount of protein in it.

Exercise, exercise, exercise.. Cats have strong claws maybe because they are clawing all time..
In some Arabic countries men grow their pinky nails for some reason.. Was the original meaning of it that they don't have work for a living or what.. ???

Calcium is probobly the bigest factor in this, if you want to push the issue, I forget what the stuff is called, 'Hooftone??' it is a product that causes horses hoofs to become stronger, sold at agricultral supply stores ' feed stores ' Not to expensive as I remember, it is used same as directed for horses, on fingernails. -Tranceharper
