Ghetto Scale
    #4618040 - 09/03/05 11:04 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Yeah, due to lack of money and these gas problems around here, I was wondering how much a dime would weigh? Im making the ghetto scale.

Grams:
A penny is 2.5
A nickel is 5
And i think a quarter is 10
But how much does a dime weigh? A gram?

Dime: 2.268g
Penny: 2.500g (3.1g before 1982)
Nickel: 5.000g
Quarter: 5.670g

From Wikipedia

Two additional thoughts on that (assuming you're talking about a balance of sorts, since that seems like the easiest thing to make ghetto-style): First, make sure to test / calibrate it by checking that you can weigh some number of nickels against twice as many pennies and measure them as equal to be sure that it doesn't mechanically favor one side. Second, keep in mind if you hadn't already thought of this that you could weigh more precise measurements by adding coins to both sides, ie a nickel on one side and a quarter on the other would only be adding about 2/3 gram difference to the quarter side. I wouldn't trust it to be perfect, but you could probably figure something that'd be reasonably accurate to some fraction of a gram.

Cool idea, post back if it you actually get this working. I'm curious.

Just whipping out my scale here and doing some measurements, here is what I have:

1964 penny: 3.0g (you gotta figure after so many years it'll be worn somewhat, so it could be 3.0, or it could be +-.1g accuracy)

Massuchewhateverthefuck quarter: 5.7g
1999 nickel: 5.0g
1992 penny: 2.5g
1994 dime: 2.3g

Looks like they all go pretty well with what wiki says.
