Found a ton of the chicken of the woods
    #4612889 - 09/02/05 03:03 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I was just walking in the park with my gf, not really looking for or picking any mushrooms although I did see some out there. Anyways I happened to notice a large tree in the distance that had tons of orange growth at the bottom. This was like the mother load. I wished I had my camera with me while I was out there.
I took as much as i could fit in a shopping bag and in my hands.. People thought I was weird but I don't really expect for them to understand. I've been doing this long enough to where I'm used to those reactions.

Anyways here's some pics of what I was able to bring back with me.

Fry some up and tell us how it was .

For sure... I got tons of it, i just took a few pieces off of one of them, fried em up in straight butter and it filled a whole plate... these bad boys are tasty... I'm washing them down with about 20 beers or so.

Good to hear you enjoyed them

I haven't had much luck with chicken of the woods. Every time I try them I find them to be tasteless with a woody texture, even with very young specimens

Might have something to do with the variety... these specimens have a white pore surface... they vary from place to place.. To me they taste tender and juicy, with their own unique flavor. A lot like chicken.

They are good for you I bet. Mushrooms contain a lot of micro chemicals that other plant and fruits don't, that benefit the body. I am feeling really content right now and all I've eaten the entire day was a bagel for breakfast(more like lunch I got up at 1pm) and then I mowed 2 yards and did some very strenuous landscaping, and when I got home I ate some chanterelle and oyster mushroom stir fry.... 3 hours later I still feel full and happy.
When you eat meats with mushrooms it makes them sooo much better, I added some chicken and ham to my stir fry, I'm also particularly fond of them with hot peppers.

True, but it depends where you harvest them.

I often ignore choice edibles due to worries of heavy metal content.

Of course I've left some nice boletus behind because they were growing from a fertilized and most likely bug sprayed lawn.
The only mushrooms I pick are from the woods, or a wide open field.
Except weilii, I've picked those and in MOST areas they are probably filled with large amounts of toxins/carcinogens, etc. But this is a debate yet to be proved by anyone. You can almost tell by the smell.
If the area looks good, pick them.

L. sulphureus, one of my favorite mushrooms!

It grows on old trees, and hollows them out. This increases the trees flexibility, allowing it to survive strong winds and thus live longer.

They are great in chicken or pork casseroles
