Casing mix
    #4587505 - 08/27/05 01:33 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I could not find any oyster shell or calcium carbonate where i am at so i got hydrated lime, i know this stuff is pretty strong so i was wondering how much i should add to a 60/40 casing mix with WBS. and is it even necesary to have this buffer in it or would the casing work out fine. dont want to risk burning the Myc. also would adding some earthworm castings be benificial at all? thanks

Noooooo you dont want hydrated lime it has a high magnesium content that isnt good for shrooms, take it back get dehydrated or crushed lime, you can also buy calcium tablets at a pharmacy make sure it says "as calcium carbonate" on the back...

lime and oyster shells last longer than tablets, it just depends on what materials you have in your area, this is kinda hard to find but you might have it somwhere where your at but real old school chalk not the synthetic stuff they use now but real chalk works great, find any of thease and it will do...

You casing is 60/40 what ?  Thats just the ratio, not what it's made of. Are you using peat, coir, what ?

You need a buffer if you're using peat. If using coir, a long term buffer such as oyster shell can be beneficial. The starting ph is OK from the start with a coir verm casing layer.

Not all hydrated lime is high in magnesium. Mine is only .45%.

It is strong though so watch how much you use if you go this way.

yeah sorry i should have clarified that it is 60/40 coir verm. So the ph will be fine if i am just planning on throwing the materials out after the flushes, i dont want to keep the coir and stuff long term, it is really cheap here. what about earthworm castings wil this add some more nutes to the casing

the purpose of casing is that it has no nutritional value. to defeat that would make it not casing, and not serve it's purpose.

Oh, and about the hydrated lime, yes, magnesium is bad, but being way off on the ph in my openion is worse. remember stammets formula calls for alot more of a slower acting lime, so the cumulative ammount of magnesium if he were to use a higher magnesium lime would be alot. hydrated lime isn't my favorite, but i use about 2-4 fluid oz, per 4gallons of loose dry material.

Yes if you add castings it should be to the substrate.........

i have the same hydrated lime that it mentions in 50/50+ tek, but now i wonder would you even bother with it if you were using coir/verm, people have been saying that this mixture with no ph adjuster is fine?

you can get away with peat/verm w/o adjustments as well, it's just not optimal. I really couldn't tell you what the ph of coir is. I'd give it a shot though. my guess it it's be safer to go without adjustments
