Isolating reishi on agar
    #4580174 - 08/25/05 03:22 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

Soon I will begin growing reishis and experimenting with agar. I've read a few simple guides to isolating cubensis strains on agar and am wondering if it is the same with reishi.

Does the reishi myc sector off into noticable sections that can be seen when held up to the light? Or is it uniform in appearance and I am just supposed to take out peices randomly.

I have yet to order the GGMM, and I'm sure that my questions could all be answered in there, but I was just wondering for now...

It will sector just like cubensis. Transfer each sector to a new dish to grow out. Fruit each sector separately to determine the best fruiting strain, then discard the rest. Be sure to keep all dishes in the refrigerator as soon as you've transferred from them to stop growth. Also make sure they're properly marked so you can go to the correct one when you determine the best fruiting strain.

Is there a reference to strains and what they look like on agar on this site or does anyone know where I can find a resource with that contained?

I have no idea if there's a picture library or not of mycelium on agar pictures. However, reishi mycelium looks and behaves like most other mushroom mycelium. There really is no way macroscopically to tell one mycelium from another with any degree of certainty.
