Is rye flour a suitable substitute for BRF?

I think the general consensus is NO! It gets pastey and does not allow the myc. to spread throughout.

wouldn't it just take a different ratio of verm and water to get the right consistency?

I've tried once along time ago and after I boiled the jars, you could actually see the clumps of rye. It looked alot different than sterilized brf.Sort of like little pebbles. I tossed em' and re-did them w. brf. I don;t know maybe I fucked up somewhere. Hardwaters, if you have the rye already do one cake boil it, and see what happens. If it looks like it may work, knock it it up w. only like 1cc, and let it go next to your other ones. Then you can do a comparison.

I've innoc'd one rye flour/ verm jar. It has colonized in a thick mat on top. I'm gonna keep playing with it though,(why not, I bought five pounds?) a different mix might work better. I also just went to the natural foods store and ordered a 50 pound bag of rye berries for like 15$. I really like the berries! Knocked up like eight jars of rye berries, and they colonized to 50-70% within three days! Hell yeah! If you want to try rye/verm cakes use less flour, maybe 1-1-3/4 or even 1-1-1/2 put in extra verm. to absorb water. After almost three weeks the rye flour/verm jar is still growing, and does not appear to be contam'd. GL Friend, and let us know how it works.

Ok thanks, the only reason I asked is because my local store will be out of BRF for about a week but they have plenty of rye flour. Worst case scenario will be if the rye flour breaks down after PCing, I can always toss if I don't like the result.

FYI yes it works, mix it very well dry then add the water. Yes it is pastey but it still colonizes just fine. And yes I have used it(dark rye flour). GL

Well, there you go. See, I threw it away without trying it first. Do you think it was as productive as BRF?

I guess, technically speaking, rye would have more nutrients/sugar than rice... so it might be more productive, only one way to find out though.

If I remember right they produced very well, heres a sample of Dark rye flour cakes double ended with 50/50+ after a 24hr. fridge dunk.

Well I pulled the jars from the PC last night and besides the substrate looking a little darker than normal, (probably because the rye flour is darker) it all looked good. I used 3 cups Verm to 1.5 cups rye flour and 1.5 cups water. So I shot them up 4 jars w/ GT and 2 with Orrisa India, all are going on hpoo later down the road.
