Playing with a pick is hard :(

I started off acoustic playing with bare fingers and now I'm trying to use a pick for a fuller sound, but I can't hit the strings! Every time I hit a string that I think I'm hitting, it turns out I'm hitting the one above or below it. Any tips for using a pick? Maybe I'm holding it wrong or something...

I figured somebody would say that :P . It's cool though, there's nothing like the sound of a clean chord every now and then LOL

Work your way up gradually. Start on one string or two and do riffs or solos just on those, then gradually go to other strings. You will get it sooner than you think.

I had always wanted to play the guitar too...something nice to go with lyrics I'm always writing. I saw the Esteban commercials and said why the eff not? It's not a bad guitar, not a good one either lol. The low E twangs and buzzes a lot. A great learner's guitar nonetheless.

like stefan said, lots of practice. Not sure if you do this or not, but up-picking allows your brain to calculate exactly where the string is, and also helps with speed.
for example, if a note is played twice, instead of down-picking twice, down-pick once, and then up-pick once.

For a while, when I was learning, my fucking brother kept chewing up the pick "to make them soft"! So I HAD to learn how to play with my fingers. I didn't really have a choice. I honestly prefer my fingers anyways, and if I want a cleaner sound I just don't trim my fingernails on my right hand and use them like picks. I feel like I have more control over the strings when just using my fingers....

Same thing happened to me when I started playing guitar. I originally had a bass so using a pick was a big change. But like someone above said, you'll get used to it with some practice.

Playing with a pick is really easy after you get used to it and you can adjust the picks position in your fingers to create different tones.

If you want some great picking practice, get some tabs or sheet music if you can read music and learn to play "the needle and the damage done" by neil young. It will seem impossible on your first try but will come with ease after a lot of practice. Keep at it and don't give up! Learning to play the guitar takes time, practice, and patience.
Good luck and keep pluckin

Do a search online for some free guitar "Scales/Arpeggios". Learning scales was one of the best things I ever did to improve my playing. Especially when you want each note to sound. Arpeggios sound so beautifull when played correctly. Of course an Arpeggio is just a chord or scale that allows each note to run into each other and flow freely from each other-did that make sense, lol?
Scales Arpeggios Chords
Look around that site and you will find all kind of goodies
How long have you been playing? If you are having problems hitting the string that you are aiming at, lol, try watching your picking hand and not your fretting hand. Once you have use of the pick down pretty good then try picking and staring off into the crowds(you'll suck at first, lol-I did too).
"Practice is the true "Key" of "G"(guitar)".
Good Luck and may You be blessed with "Perfect Pitch"!
Also when you are playing really hard and your fretting fingers are really sore and seem not to want to slide on the strings fast enough-if you don't have any "Fast-Fret" around, try rubbing your finger tips all over your nose, lol, yes, your Nose! The grease from your nose acts as a natural lubricant and your fingers will be like greased lightening for a short period of time. It works in pinch, especially when your on stage and your fingers start sticking to the strings.
Well, that's enough tips for today + I'm tired,lol.
"He played till his fingers bled", they said, "then the bones started to jam"
My two pennies!

well yea. keep practicing. Once youve played for years it will be sub-consioucs like an extension of your body almost. Also i always up picked in the beggining, it was really hard for me to down pick... so if your gonna up pick, also practice down pick and alternating picking guitar is amazing, after a while, once you get used to it, once its subconscious, its VERY theraputic PEACE!
