Bear mauls mushroom collector Date: Sunday, August 14 @ 00:14:37 CDT BST Topic: Home news
13 August 2005 - Collecting the expensive Sangay Shamu (Matsutake mushroom) being a proven risk, a 34-year old man is recuperating in the Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital after he was mauled by a Himalayan Black Bear on the morning of August 10.
Tsagay, of Zamto village in Genekha geog, Thimphu, was returning home after collecting a bag of Sangay Shamu around 8.00 am when he suddenly came face to face with a bear which was about his size. ?There was nothing I could do, he charged me with wide open mouth and all I felt was numbness,? said Tsagay. Although Tsagay was carrying a patang (sword) and a cudgel he couldn?t draw his patang. ?When the bear caught my leg, I hit him thrice with the cudgel. After that its raw strength overpowered me.?
Tsagay suffered deep cuts on his left calf, right thigh, deep scratches on his back, and cuts on the back of his forearm. The upper end of the muscles on his left calf was totally ripped off.
?I knew bears attack the face so I ducked my head,? he said. The bear caught his jacket and dragged him for about 50 metres. Tsagay let his jacket go with the bear and was saved later by his neighbours when he shouted for help.
The incident happened on the first day of the Matsutake collection period. Farmers around the country are only allowed to collect Matsutake from August 10 to October 10 for sustainable harvest of the high-demand mushroom.
Although farmers in Genekha are aware that the area is infested with bears the rush for Matsutake had always made collectors vulnerable to bear attacks, Tsagay?s uncle, Khandu, told Kuensel. ?We know that if we shout, bears will keep away, but when you are competing for Matsutake, you have to be silent,? he said. ?Most people encounter bears when they penetrate deep in the forest and keep silent.?
Genekha village, rich in Matsutake, had always seen many wild animals. ?The area is a good habitat for wild animals because of the foliage and jungle and crops,? he said. In the past few months, the village lost three calves and a horse to what they suspect to be leopards. ?Bears and wild boars are plenty and we can expect an attack any time, especially during the Matsutake collection season,? Khandu said.
?Bears come out at dusk to feed and that is when Matsutake collectors start their journey to the jungle.?
