1 Quart Jars for PF-Tek?
    #4523228 - 08/11/05 05:38 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

I'm reading through a PF-Tek from fungifun and it says: "It is important to note, that jars somewhat larger than 1/2 pint are unreliable for the PF Tek and fail easily." Being that a 1 quart jar is "somewhat larger" than a 1/2 pint jar, should I not even attempt to use these jars or is this statement BS? Thanks,
Luciano

You don't want to use Quart jars for the pf tek.

You want to use 1/2 pint jars and pint jars.

The pint jars take longer to colonize than the 1/2 pint jars so most people don't use them.

I have used pint jars with BRF/Verm in the past...they work.

Damnit, someone needs to silence Shroom Wizard. He told me they would be fine. I've got 60 jars and no receipt so thank you, Shroom Wizard.

What about if I use a different substrate such as this:
5 cups vermiculite
3 cups cow manure
10 tablespoons BRF
1.5-1.75 cups water?

This recipe was taken from the Pan Cyan grow FAQs, BTW.

you'll neveer get those cakes out of there... for quart jars, try a grain tek, like rye or wbs

lolzz

he doesn't need to worry about getting the BRF/Verm substrate out of a Quart jar.

he needs to worry about it ever fully colonizing...which is almost impossible to do.

then he would have to break up the substrate to get it out...so it would have to be cased.

Okay, what about either (A) filling them close to the top as usual and storing them with a humidifier in the storing room to keep them from drying out or (B) only filling them about half way or a little less to mimic a pint jar?

Also, how much different would colonization be if the recipe was changed from mostly BRF/verm to mostly cow manure/verm?

I spent $60 on these quart jars and can't take them back so I'd like to use them if it is at all, in any way, possible.

Here is another substrate recipe for Pan Cyans from the FAQs:
1 cup cow manure
1/4 cup rye grass seed
1/4 cup perlite? (I thought it was supposed to be vermiculite)
water to field capacity

That recipe is from a member called "teonan". Since this one has the seed in it does it have a better chance of fully colonizing a quart jar?

if you are going with grains in it, then just go with the grains. you must have a pc to be able to them though, boiling/steaming is just not going to be enough to sterilize the grains.
get the grain jars colonized and then spawn them to poo, this is your best option to get a successful grow.
KISS= keep it simple stupid, not saying you are stupid either.
Is this your first time around? Yes you say, then keep it simple until you have a better understanding of how things are going to work for you in your conditions.

best of luck
peace

Thanks, yeah this is my first time but I already bought the 1 quart jars because Shroom Wizard said they were okay. Needless to say he gave me a lot of misleading info that will lead to a failed grow. I'd just like to be able to use them, even if it means filling them only half full.

can you pick up pint or half pint jars? if so just transfer the contents, re sterilize and inoculate those, save the quarts for grains...

well shroom wizard is a moron, no doubt, and his techniques suck ass. had to get that out of the way.

anyway....I have used 1q jars and 1pt jars both for PF tek. Will they work, sure, will colonization time take forever and not be even, sure.

the main problem you are going to be looking at with larger jars for PF tek are moisture issues. Chances are, in a 1q jar, most of the "colonized" mycelium and substrate will dry out before the thing fully colonizes. You would have to get the water content Perfect in order to do it.

The highest I think you should go is 1pt for PF. Don't waist your time/money in larger jars.

And don't look to the shroom wizard for advice, come here.

if you already have the jars, look into the rye teks...that way it isn't a total loss.
