Terrarium humidity ?uestion...
    #4506338 - 08/07/05 09:57 AM (16 years, 1 month ago)

Just sterilized and filled my terrarium w/damp perlite last night. Perlite layer is about 1 1/2'' high, the water level is about 1/4'' high. My cakes are in the fridge cold-shocking in their jars and will go in tonight. I was curious though --- when I woke up, there was no visible condensation on the sides of the terrarium. Do the cakes need to be in there for this to happen? The temps where the terrarium was last night were around 70. Do the temps need to be higher for the humidity to build and for there to be water on the sides?

Thanks in advance.

I have a perlite base.  I put a temp/humidity gauge in there this weekend, I had 98% humidity and 81 degrees consistant. The light was Flouresant*sp* 2ft plant grower from homedepot.  Not much condensation on the walls, very little to be exact.  so you sould be ok

I am a newbie, but I just set up a fruiting chamber myself with perlite. The idea behind the perlite I think is to have the water level as low as possible yet still have the water wick its way to the surface layer slightly that way you have the maximum surface area on the perlite for evaporation in order to increase humidity. (If I am wrong someone please correct me.) I did a little experiment with my tub and put the perlite in first about two inches, then added water about half the depth of the perlite. leaving the cover off the tub I waited an hour then took a paper towel and patted the top of the perlite. The towel was dry so I added more water waited an hour did the same. What I found was that at a temp of 76-78 deg I had to fill the water up within about 1/2 to 3/8 of an inch of the top of the perlite in order to have the water wick to the surface. This may be too much water, I'm not sure, but I have been getting condensation on the sides and top of my tub and the first cake I put in there is pinning pretty well I think. Just my two cents, and good luck in your future endeavors

I placed my perlite in the strainer and submerged it in water. waited 10 min lifted it out, nice water absorbency. then once I added that to the fruiting chamber, I added some more distilled water (use best judgement
