How long will non-sterile substrate last in the fridge?
    #4479451 - 08/01/05 12:33 AM (18 years, 7 months ago)

When I was done packing the 6 jars of substrate, I was left with 2 jars worth of substrate in the bowl. I could only boil 6 jars at once, so now I'm left with 2 jars of substrate which will have to go tonight and much of tomorrow non-sterile. I put the substrate into the jars and put them in the fridge - will this be good enough to ward off any contaminants until I can get to boil them? If any conataminants do appear between now and tomorrow, will they be easily killed by boiling the jars anyway?

If it helps, I used the standard PF-Tek mix - Verm/BRF/Water in 1/2 pint jars.

You should be fine.

Im worried about your use of the word "boil". If by boil you mean pressure cook you should be fine if you follow procedure. Your prepared substrate will last quite a long time if you eventually prepare it properly... using a pressure cooker. If you are really only boiling your jars you might have problems down the road regardless of how fresh your substrate is.

In the past people have had success with only boiling, but it is not the the recommended way to go.

Nah, I'm not pressure cooking them.. just boiling them in an inch of water for about 100 minutes. I don't have a pressure cooker available to me, so I'm working with the best I have - hopefully it won't be a problem.

It wont be with the PF Tek, no PC is needed.
