Anyone tried any unusual substrates?
    #4460257 - 07/27/05 01:45 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Hi guys,

Just wondered if anyone had tried any unusual substrates. I was in the health food shop today stocking up on Rye and Popcorn and couldnt help looking at all the other organic grain/seed products on offer. There was millet, sunflower seeds, bran, and a whole host of other similar looking products. Any experimented with these?

Just curious.............??

sunflower seeds go mushy. There was a thread a while back using lots of stuff. search for mung and you will find it.
I got sweetcorn and red kidney beans and peas to colonise but not fruit

millet works well, so does wheat. I am trying barley next

Would you say millet was as good as rye or popcorn?

Millet is good, rye holds the most water. Popcorn sucks ass, compared..it can work, but alot of poor results. The best would be a mix of rye and millet, about 50/50, with some vermiculite thrown in. Simmer the rye for longer then the millet, soak both for 24 hours then simmer until kernals start to pop. Check my Grain link in my signature for info on doing a mixture for fruiting off of, just replace WBS in my link with millet (WBS is mostly millet). If your spawning to poo...straight millet would work best (smaller kernals, more inoculation points per volume).

True, I was thinking of WBS mixes which are usually hulled, in fact lots of grains in health food stores are hulled or crushed/rolled. You only want whole, unhulled/crushed grains.

Other unusual substrates have been bras & toilet rolls

Lol....

I tried ground pasta w/ brf, worked for a week then reaked lol.

As said, popcorn colonizes but it's a POOR fruiter. I've tried it several times trying to get more out of it....but it just sucks lol.

Alien Substrate is pretty rad. Any grains can be used as long as the moisture content is right and they aren't too "oily". Grind up some quinoa and seasame seed and use it like brown rice flour. Peeace

For a week, I consumed only grain-based foods, such as pasta, rice, and bread... and even some dog food.
I boiled my own feces and inoculated it using a syringe i made from a previous batch. Those turds grew some of the most potentous mushrooms ever concieved by man!
