cake/casing hybrid
    #4446878 - 07/24/05 01:32 PM (18 years, 7 months ago)

i have had issues with contams on my casing attempts so i have been doing this cake casing hybrid thing. What i want to know is how a casing would be any better.

what i do is just lay down some foil or plastic, put down like 1-2mm of verm (basically just enough so that you can barely see any foil).  then i put down the crumbled substrate (WBS, RYE, or horse poo), and then i put another 1-2mm of verm over the top of it.    basically it ends up looking like a giant cake that was rolled in verm fairly heavily.  I have been getting decent fruits from this method as well.    ZERO % contam rate on my entire process too

here is a REALLY small version of what i am doing (this was the initial test run)  there was maybe 4-5oz of rye here:

do you incubate after "casing" or go straight into fruiting chamber?

i pull them out of the incubator, dunk them, and then "case" them directly to the fruiting chamber. it usually will just take a bit longer to fruit if it needs to "regrow". they take as long as they need to "puff up" and then they will fruit.

If you place them on a screen then there might be a problem with pinning underneath into the geo-lite and possibly rotting, if light can get to the bottom. If that happened then you would have to actually remove the whole giant cake to tend to the bottom.

I just believe the less you have to handle them the less the chance of anything getting contaminated.

Take care n be safe...

hrm true. i am already having issues with ONLY the bottoms of my cakes pinning even though there should be no light down there. it all comes from the top. i generally just flip the cakes over if i see that, but that wont work here
