Good Hygrometer/Thermometer
    #442884 - 10/31/01 08:04 AM (22 years, 4 months ago)

Can anyone recommend a good Hygrometer/Thermometer (brand and model would help, too)? Thanks

Dude, I use a Oregon Scientific EMR-963HG Cable Free Thermo-Hygrometer, it sells for US$ 54.00 , and you can also use it at your house later...
Go to yahoo shopping and try a search for hygrometers, they range in price from US$ 10.00 to US$ 100.00, and will be delivered very soon to your house. You do not need a precision one for this.

Teiro,
Dude, this thing is awesome! The remote sensor rules! It's exactly what was needed. Thanks again.

Radio Shack sells a pretty good one, Radio Shack Catalog # 63-1031

Sells for $29.99 (regular price)

I think it works great, seems to be pretty accurate, and is most importantly WEATHER PROOF.

Don't get the cheaper one for $20 anywhere, especially not at TARGET, the cheap ones will fog up inside and die. Unlike the Radio Shack one, it's weather proof.

I just returned a hygrometer to Radio Shack - the exact model you mentioned, in fact. In itself, the hygrometer works great, but the problem is, although it has an "outdoor" thermometer, it only contains an "indoor" hygrometer, which means that the hygrometer has to be left in the chamber itself. If, as is so often the case with a moist growth chamber, you can't see well inside the box, then you have to open up the box and pull out the hygrometer every time you want to read the thing!

Does anybody have a recommendation for a good digital hygrometer/thermometer which has a thermocouple or something that can be place in the chamber while the unit itself is left outside? Actually, Radio Shack has something like this, but its $60! I'm hoping for something a little more reasonably priced.

My roommates furbie can't say from experience whether this is a good model or not as he's yet to grow his first batch, but it looks like something that he could flush-mount to use through the hood. Check it out and see how it looks. He just thought you might be interested in knowing.

Mycologist, please reread the post. The Thermo/Hygro that I'M speaking of does just that. It has a base unit, and a REMOTE sensor (comes with one remote sensor). The base unit can handle 3 remote units. The base unit is also a Thermometer/Hygor. Only one remote comes with the original purchase. Here's the model # Oregon Scientific, EMR 963 HG

Closetworx -

Looked up the Oregon Scientific model you described. Its about the same as the $60 Radio Shack thermo-hygrometer, with a similar price once you pay postage. The one advantage that the Oregon Scientific brand seems to have is that it gets more "channels" (6 as opposed to 3), so you can read more sensor units if you have multiple boxes.

However, today I broke down and bought the remote sensor type at Radio Shack. Works great, though I haven't tried the "bag of salt" test for accuracy.

The difference between the indoor and outdoor reading is that the "indoor" readings are taken right on the device itself, while the "outdoor" reading is taken by an attached thermocouple. If its a "cheapo" unit like you describe, chances are the only "outdoor" reading it will take is temperature, not humidity.

You should put your hygrometer/thermometer in the drawer with your jars and use the "indoor" reading.
