Plans for system - Can you improve on it?
    #442584 - 10/30/01 10:50 PM (22 years, 4 months ago)

I've got a current setup (First set of images), want to expand for larger production. I'm running the idea for the bigger setup by those in here before I implement it. If anyone can see any shortfalls / improvements to the latter system, please, I'm open to suggestion.

Current System:
Side View:

Top View:

Wooden shelving unit
- 36"w x 18"d x 48"h

0.35 mm, 10'x25' plastic dropsheet
- Tarped around 4 sides and the top, one side 2x (Diagram)
- Bottom is open
- Finishing nails / tacks holding into place
- Wraps around, one side twice (Will understand in a few moments)

Dropsheet Zipper
- Put on inside flap of dropsheet (Diagram)
- Zipper has strong adhesive on one side.
- Apply zipper to plastic on inner flap
- Outter layer turns into a "shield" layer, prevents some activity from entering

Lighting
- From IKEA, neat little halogen bulbs
- Normally found under kitchen cabinets or inside glass cabinets
- 2 bulb assemblies in the box

Air exchange
- HEPA filter
- Output of HEPA filter into top of shelving unit via duct tape
- Oxygen / CO2 exiting system flows down, between shelves, and out bottom of system
- Air stops, plastic falls to ground at bottom, preventing contams entering
- Nothing on ground / 10" from ground, so nothing to contam that low

Humidification
- Perlite on top shelf, directly under HEPA filter
- Humid air is heavier, will flow down

Proposed:

Proposed changes:
- Galvanized stainless steel rack instead of wood (Expandable)
- System expanded to 96"w x 18"d x 72"h
- Dropsheet is black , non-see-through
- 3 zippers used instead of 1 (To gain access without leaning over product)
- Cool mist humidifier added
- HEPA filter to Cool Mist humidifier to system
- Cool Mist in to system @ 2 points (Y Hose)
- Plastic on all edges
- Exhaust Fan
- Timer on Fan, Humidifier, Filter
- Alternative to exhaust fan is a flap that would have weights on bottom to stop from opening.

Please give suggestions on how to improve this. I know it's elaborate, but, I'd like to know how to make it 'better'. Eventually mass-producing for my large circle of friends / family.

My first thoughts are you would not want wood for a setup like this, either plastic, or plastic/rubber coated wire would be better.

Is that for the first setup, or the second?
Wood being bad, I can understand. But I thought that metal would be easier to disinfect / steralize than plastic?

Wood is definately bad.. I something like an oven rack would be good or get some galvanized wire for your shelves. It would allow better airflow, it's sturdy and would be easy to custom fit.

No stainless stell would be ideal, just pricey. It will be easy
to sterilize but you are going to want something that is not solid, definately for air flow and the sheer weight.

The system I'm working on is made out of racks similar to that which makes up some department store shelving units (Expensive as hell, expandable, yet if I'm gonna do this, I want it to MY specifications, not what Mr. Walmart TELLS me they are going to be)

I figured optimal airflow, decent weight, if I decide not to grow shrooms, they can hold.... ... ... dead bodies or something.

Are you sure you want to use halogen lighting? Im thinking fire hazard and too high heat in general. Go with flouro or even rope light :)

My current setup has yet to reach 76 degrees. I'm having a problem GENERATING heat right now, and I feel if I'm to use cool-mist, I'm going to need to generate one hell of a lot more...

For heat, place a heat pad under the set up... Incase of fire haz. I would put it on a timer for 2 hours intervals every 2 hours. Wood is probly not a good idea... I like rubber made products my self.

BTW... your exhaust fan could run into trouble as well... High RH will rust up your fan in time...
