In my research putting the cakes directly on the perlite can be good and bad. The good is that they keep super hydrated as long as you water the perlite and mist giving you super big shrooms ...Cons well if contamination starts your other cakes are at risk because all the same water recycles itself in the tub or whatever your using... I suggest to solve this problem is to change the perlite immedetly and remove the contam cake..well those r my thoughts hope they help....superbob57

if you're going to do that why not just make wells for your cakes and but a layer of something between it and the perlite, like say the jar lid with hydrated verm in it. i know that doesn't answer your question, but if hydration is the only pro of putting it on there, then dunking or using a well would make it obsolete

dunking does a lot to rehydrate cakes. if you dunk and keep the humidity in the pod over 90, you don't need your cakes directly on the perlite.
