In such times as ours however, when there is too much order, too much m management, too much programming and control, it becomes the duty of superior men and women and women to fling their favorite monkey wrenches into the machinery. To relieve the repression of the human spirit, they must sow doubt and disruption" "People do it every day, they talk to themselves ... they see themselves as they'd like to be, they don't have the courage you have, to just run with it."

Secure PMs should work fine on more than one computer. You'll need your private key file (zippoz Private Key.txt) which was created during setup. On your second computer, enter your passphrase to decrypt a secure PM. You will be prompted for the location of your private key file, just upload it and you should be good to go.

The file in generated when you go through the secure PM setup process. You are prompted to download it and then delete it off our server.

Fortunately private keys are all less than 2,000 characters in size, so using the Shroomery's patent-pending SecuriToo technology, one of our professional security artists will be glad to embed your private key in the skin of your arm, chest or leg. For additional security we can print it on your back and provide you with a mirror for de-obfuscation. Just call 1-800-INK-ME-UP to consult with one of our specialists.

woah sweet. Can I get the microchip implanted in my forehead too?
But on a related note... what happens if you forgot to download the key when you registered the thing.

Well, after the board so kindly prompted me, i set up the secure PM option, but everytime i send a PM, it bounces me out of the SSL to send it. What gives?

If you didn't download your private key during setup then you may have a bit of a problem. The private key must be available in order to decrypt secure PMs, but if we stored it on our server that would negate the effectiveness of the encryption. That's why you have to store it on your system and keep it safe. It's transmitted to us (over a secure connection) any time you decrypt a message, then immediately removed from our server. Of course, it must be available on your computer for this to work.
The private key is stored as a cookie in your web browser so that people don't have to upload it every time they want to decrypt a message. It's possible you may be able to recover your private key from there. Look for a cookie in the www.shroomery.org domain with the name '104990privatekey' (other members replace 104990 with your user number). The contents of that cookie is your private key. Copy it into a text document and save it somewhere safe. You'll be prompted for it if you ever switch computers or the private key cookie is erased.
If it isn't saved as a cookie on your system, you will have to create a new keypair. Unfortunately, it will be impossible to decrypt any secure PMs you received before the new keys are created. However, it will enable you to use the functionality for future correspondence.
Hope this helps. BTW sweet avatar!

Hmm this sounds like a bug, if you have SSL enabled in your profile it should always be active. For what it's worth your secure PMs are being sent over a secure connection, you're just being forwarded back to an insecure page. I'll look into this and see if I can fix it.

Okay, unfortunately I haven't been able to reproduce this problem. When I turn on SSL for my account and send a private message, it works fine and I maintain a secure connection throughout. Could you please post more details about this, like what browser you're using and when exactly you get sent back to an insecure connection? Thanks man.

Here's another question about that silly thing. In the first place, I had and have no interest in using the bugger, but then I got tired of the red being up, and some one said they sent a message, but I never got it. Thinking that maybe it was because I didn't set this thing up, I tried it out. I typed a pass phrase in and clicked enter, it said that the web page could not be shown(something like that) so I tried it again, and it said I already had it, but I never got to the second screen. So I don't know what the other code I needed is.Does that mean I won't be able to access my pm's?
Sorry very tired, so that may not make allot of sense.

Hello,
It sounds like your keypair was created successfully, but the script timed out before forwarding you to the confirmation screen. This is a problem I've been able to reproduce sporadically but I'm not sure exactly what's causing it. Fortunately there is a simple solution. When you compose a new PM or reply, you will see an option to encrypt the message. There will also be a link to download your private key and then delete it from our server. After completing those two steps, encrypted PMs will be fully secure on your account if you ever wish to use them in the future.
This also inspired me to make the registration script more tolerant of errors like timeouts so hopefully the setup process will be easier for people in the future. Thanks!
