question, pics
    #4395260 - 07/12/05 08:43 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

ok i know i asked this yesterday. but should the veils already be breaking at this size. you can see the zippo lighter to the right. is it possible that i didnt put enough of a top casing layer. i think i may have skimped on it.

is poo the only way to get real big fruit, or could it be an insufficient casing layer, or fruiting conditions?

also, is straw comparable to poo? or is poo really 'the shit'?

Those look kinda tasty!

Grain spawn to straw, or poo, or straw/poo, will produce some very nice yields as compared to just straight grain/brf casings.

Nice job anyhow-you should be extremely trippily happily!

Those look fine for non poo. And yes, poo is where the big chumpies are at.

Somewhere around 3 to 4 inches of pasturized h/poo substrate spawned at a 20% rate with colonized WBS, in nested 12 quart dishpans (foil between the two) & 3/4 to 1 inch of good casing layer fruited in near optimal conditions will get you some whoppers, instead of minimacs. Those grew, so you are on the right track.
Just step up to h/poo.

Yeah, poo does a mushroom good. I grew some mexicubs on WBS cased with 50/50+ and got the typical short, kinda fat fruitbodies that are typical of mexicubs grown on cakes. When I did the same with h/poo, I thought I had mistakingly mixed my mexicub and B+ syringes. The mexicub fruits were huge! Poo is definitely the way to go. Straw/Poo mix is great too.

odor was discussed in another thread as being pretty mild, worst part is pasteurizing but even then i guess its not bad, but what substrate and casing did u use for those?

Odor is not too bad, as long as the poo is leeched well. I think it has a "barn" type smell IMO.

I tried this "cooler tek" that I heard about in a thread somewhere here:
You get a small styrofoam cooler. You boil enough water to cover your poo in the pillow case in the cooler. Once the water comes to a boil, turn off the stove. I let my water sit for about 5 minutes, then CAREFULLY pour it into the cooler with the poo. Once you cover the poo completely with the hot water, close the lid tightly on the cooler and let it sit for a couple of hours. Make sure you have a weight or something to keep the poo down under the water. Then handle the poo like normal. Take it out, drain and get to field capacity. Wait until it is cool, then mix with the spawn.

I was skeptical about the temps being too high with this tek for pasturization, but I have done it 3 times already with no problems. Try it yourself. It really works and keeps you from having to hang out with a thermometer constantly checking the temps. It also cuts down on the smell, being that the cooler stays shut.

Just another idea to throw your way!

Does feild capacity mean the consistency of like a fresh pile in a feild or what? h/poo sounds a lot more feasible now that I know the smell isn't bad.

field capacity = the maximum amount of water retention possible without having a pool of liquid at the bottom of the mixing container.

Exactly. To test it, squeeze it with your hand and just a couple of drops of water should drip out.

Opinions vary on the smell of the poo. I got over the smell quickly when I got my first flush of OI's.  :mushroom2:
