Dont waste dvds on non dvd quality stuff.
Get nero and/or TMPEGENC plus and make vcds/svcd. Its generally not worth to go thru the extra steps/encoding/authoring when u can just throw avi files at nero.
If an avi is too big for one disk use virtualdub to chop it up.
Check out videohelp.com and look for divx 2 svcd instuctions using tmpeg, virutal dub, and vcdeasy/nero(no need to use vcdeasy once u have mpg files encoded in mpeg1/2 you can just let nero make the vcd file structure for you).

no ther are not. MPEG1 320x240 is what is on vcds. MPEG2 400x400 is svcd and mpeg 2 720x400 is dvd( i think).
AVI is just a container file for pretty much any other video file type. AVI could be divx, xvid, huffyuv, uncompressed and others. If you need to know the codec for an avi file use GSPOT. If your computer can play the avi it can rencode it / burn it. If you get only sound or it just doesnt play you do not have the right codecs installed(seams to be very common problem). If that the case download a codec pack like "all in codec pack" or there are others that contain pretty much all that are used.

DVD is 720x480 or 720x576 i think depending on NTSC or PAL
I'd pop them avi's in tmpeg and make an SVCD thats 200%
Then split it and pop on 2 cd's
Thats what i used to do when i wanted to watch movies i'd downloaded on a dvd

Buy this: http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/det...cs&n=507846
It's a dvd player that plays DivX discs on cd. It is definitely the best $45 I've spent in a long time.

Yep tmpeg does have a cut merge program but ive never used it, that would save a step using a seperate program of having to use virtual dub to chop up an avi before encoding.
Only dvds i make are full dvdrs i download/rip. Everything else is done on svcd/vcd.

I've used TMPEG to cut and it's quite easy. There is a site (probably already posted) that explains, step by step how to do it.
In nero, go to 'data cd' and then video cd to make a vcd.
