Amanita muscaria in CT/MA area?
    #4355218 - 06/30/05 12:13 PM (18 years, 8 months ago)

I live in CT and on the border of MA in the woods and have been searching for some Amanita muscaria. All the books and sites I've looked at say that these mushrooms grow all over North America including the East coast. Has anyone found Amanita muscaria in this region?

Hi PlasticFantastic,
Welcome to the Shroomery. :mushroom2:

It's too early in the season for Amanita muscaria. You usually won't see them in your area until August/September. I suspect that you will probably find the yellow variety (Amanita muscaria var. Formosa). Look under pines and other evergreens.

I wouldnt say nearly identical, Amanita muscaria is pretty distinct. But be careful none-the-less.
I havnt been to your area, but forests arent the best place to look. Try [untreated] yards that have well spaced trees. This kind of enviroment is the best to find A. muscaria (as well as A. citrina and a few others) in my experience.

People have posted Amanita muscaria finds from Florida. I think they are mostly in the northern panhandle.

Yeah, August/September does sound right about the time I believe I saw some before. These mushrooms I saw were located in a conifer forest with the floor mainly consisting of dead pine needles. I also remember reading that the more North the variety will most likely be yellow. The one's I saw were red though, that's what stood out to me, due to the folklorish status these mushroom's have held. Is it possible I saw a different red mushroom? Possibly a Russula emetica?

Another question I have is are there any poisoness mushrooms I might get the yellow or red Amanita muscaria confused with? I am mainly concerned with Amanita muscaria and not any others such as the Panther Amanita, isn't that on the West coast mainly anyway?

Indeed, they do favor pines. From what I've seen, they are most abundant near young pines.

As someone said, there are several similar Amanita species. The best way to be sure what you have is A. muscaria is to check for spots on the cap, a veil, and a bulbous base with concentric rings. If all three of thoses features don't check out, you don't have A. muscaria.

On a seperate note, why would you bother with Amanitas? Most people liken their experience more to a poisoning than any kind of drug trip. If I were you I would read plenty of trip reports before putting effort into hunting this mushroom. I've found it countless times and just took pictures and left it. I have no desire to try Amanitas. Call me crazy, but vomiting, sweating, nausea, and diarrhea doesn't sound like good times to me.

Yeah I have read trip reports on Erowid and the like, and yes some are bad but some are good aswell. Part of me wanting to look for one is just because it's an interesting mushroom.

Gumby: just like any other drug, some people like amanitas and some don't. Yes, there can be pretty nasty body load (especially at higher doses) but trivializing the effects to "poisoning" is missing the point. There's a reason that it's been such a revered entheogen throughout history. I'll be the first to admit it's nothing like psilocybes, but it's an interesting and worthwhile experience nonetheless for those willing to explore.
