Newb pinning question
    #4352300 - 06/29/05 07:52 PM (18 years, 9 months ago)

One of many of my jars is quite full of mycelium, nice and ropey and everything is covered ecept the top, er bottom of the jar. I was wondering how you can tell when a jar is a 100% colonized. Should i wait to see pins to shake the cake out of the jar? When should i shake the cake out of there to dunk? Thanks as always

when everything you can see in the jar is solid, dense and white, wait an extra week, it will then be fully colonized

once the jar is all the way white wait about a week to allow for it to colonize all the middle. no youshould never see pins when colonizing (unless your using that one tek).

The whole pin formation thing is an area of confusion I think. Alot of the shroomery PF teks although really good and useful are mildly outdated (for instance, the whole drip shield thing... thats a load of crap no one uses a drip shield). The reason why you might want to start exposing the cake to light and get it to pin after it is fully colonized, is because then it will pin right away when you put it into your terrarium. That way less chance of contams getting ahold, but it's entirely unescessary unless you want to.
