Verm sterilization?
    #4350036 - 06/29/05 09:58 AM (18 years, 8 months ago)

Hey guys,
I searched for this answer but could not find it. I have need to case my horse poo soon and want to know the best way to sterilize my vermiculite. Should I just put it in jars and boil or is there an easyer way?

Hydrate the verm, put it in a microwave safe container w/ lid cracked a bit, and nuke on high for 5-10 minutes, stirring halfway through. This is how I sterilize casing mixtures as well. Very effective.

Throw a verm, peat, coir mix in a tupperware tub, or microwave bag, add water to feild capacity, nuke 2.5 minutes, massage bag, flip over & nuke again 2.5 minutes. That usualy does it. If you are not sure, nuke again.

The best way is to put it in jars and pressure cooker it. this will get very high temperatures and clean anything.

boiling also works, but it isnt as reliable as it doesnt become hot enough to really kill everything. be sure to boil it for over an hour so as not to ruin your spawn!

PS, I would not use straight verm - as casing material.

50/50 with peat & throw in a handfull (or 2) of coir - works great. Add a bit of shell flour, or whatever buffer you have.

Jars work pretty well, since you can fill them up, then store many jars of casing mix, and pop one open when you need them. If you use alot of casing mix at once though, definatly best to use bags. Any PP bags from online, wrap a rubberband around the neck, tight, but loose enough to allow air to excape and pc.

Wet Verm alone compacts. Compacted, it is not airy & not the best foundation for primordia to pin out of. It will work, but (IMHO) peat, verm coir mix works 10X better.

Peat/coir forms a better mycoclimate, straight verm will hurt fruiting IME.

It is actually called CoCo Coir and is used as a casing material as they have stated above.
